Album Review: "Kashmir" by Kevin Gilbert – A Hidden Gem from 1995 If you’re into music that blends prog rock complexity with pop sensibilities, Kevin Gilbert’s Kashmir is worth a spin. Released in 1995 under P.R.A. Records, this album feels like a labor of love—Gilbert not only produced and engineered it but also poured his heart into every track. It’s not perfect, but it’s damn close. The title track, “Kashmir,” kicks things off with an atmospheric vibe that grabs your attention right away. The layered instrumentation builds slowly, creating a soundscape that feels cinematic yet intimate. You can tell Gilbert wasn’t afraid to experiment here—he mixes acoustic elements with electronic touches in ways that still sound fresh today. What sticks with me about this song? Its unpredictability. Just when you think you’ve got it figured out, the tempo shifts or a new riff sneaks in. It’s the kind of track that rewards repeat listens—you catch something new each time. Another standout is “Joytown.” This one leans more toward pop rock, but don’t let that fool you; it’s got depth. The melody is catchy as hell, but there’s a bittersweet undertone in the lyrics that lingers long after the song ends. It’s upbeat on the surface, but if you pay attention, it feels like Gilbert is wrestling with some heavy emotions. That tension between joy and melancholy makes it unforgettable. Other tracks like “Waiting (The Other Version)” and “Goodness Gracious (‘Thud’ Version)” showcase Gilbert’s knack for reimagining songs without losing their essence. These alternate versions feel less polished than the originals, but maybe that’s the point—they have a raw energy that keeps them engaging. What strikes me most about Kashmir is how personal it feels. It’s clear Gilbert wore multiple hats—producer, engineer, songwriter—and poured himself into every detail. There’s no big-name label backing this project, just a guy making music he believed in. And honestly? That gives the album a charm you don’t always find in overproduced releases. Here’s the thing: listening to Kashmir feels like discovering a secret. It’s not loud about its brilliance—it lets you uncover it bit by bit. In a world where so much music feels formulaic, this record reminds us why we fell in love with albums in the first place. Random thought: I wonder what would’ve happened if Kevin Gilbert had lived longer. Would Kashmir have gotten the recognition it deserved? Either way, it’s out there now—a little slice of musical magic waiting for anyone willing to listen closely enough.

This is a great song, but a HORRIBLE version! The original one on the album is so much better.

Much to the dismay of his old manager the owner of "gilbert propert partnership". Dude had all the songs pulled off YouTube and didn't put any of them up on the official channel. Disables all comments so their can be no discussion

I have all respect for Kevin, and have preached his abilities to the world, but this is a kick in my face. I cannot hear my one of my favorites performed by one of my favorites. I attempt to empathize with Kevin's family, but this only hurts his fans.
