Lanie Lane - To The Horses

Review by Dewey Aguilera

To The Horses by Lanie Lane: A Raw, Bluesy Ride Through Rock and Roll Chaos Lanie Lane’s To The Horses isn’t your polished pop princess record—it’s a gritty kick in the teeth, dripping with raw emotion and swagger. Released back in 2011 under Ivy League Records, this Australian gem blends Pop/Rock, Blues, and Country Rock into something that feels like a whiskey-soaked road trip through heartbreak and rebellion. And let me tell you, it sticks to your ribs. Right off the bat, “Don’t Cry” grabs you by the throat. The track is haunting as hell—Lane’s voice cracks just enough to make you feel every ounce of pain she’s singing about. It ain’t overproduced; instead, it lets her vocals do all the heavy lifting. Mixed by Chris Rollans (who clearly knows his stuff), this one lingers long after the needle lifts. You can almost picture Lane sitting on some dusty porch, pouring her guts out while the world burns around her. It’s messy, real, and unforgettable. Then there’s “Bang Bang,” which flips the script entirely. If “Don’t Cry” is a slow burn, this track is gasoline poured straight onto an open flame. The guitar riffs hit hard, and Lane snarls her way through lyrics that are equal parts bratty and badass. There’s no sugarcoating here—just pure attitude wrapped up in Blues Rock grit. Producer creds go to Lane herself, and damn if she doesn’t nail it. This song makes you wanna grab a mic stand and scream along like nobody’s watching. The credits? They matter because they show how much work went into making this thing sound alive. William Bowden mastered the hell out of it, giving each track its own punch without losing cohesion. Robert Vasey handled recording duties for “Betty Baby,” and Luke Postill engineered “What Trouble Is.” Every piece fits together like a jigsaw puzzle made of broken glass. But honestly, what makes To The Horses stand out isn’t just the technical wizardry—it’s Lane herself. She doesn’t try to be anyone but who she is: rough edges, big voice, unapologetic. In a world full of cookie-cutter artists, she’s refreshing as hell. So yeah, sure, listen to this album if you want bluesy rock with a side of country twang. But more than that, listen to it if you need a reminder that music doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful. Because at the end of the day, life ain’t perfect either—and maybe that’s why To The Horses feels so damn right. Oh, and one last thing: I still can’t figure out why they listed “That’s What You Get” twice. Maybe it’s intentional. Or maybe someone messed up. Either way, it kinda works. Like the whole damn album—flawed, fiery, and completely unforgettable.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool fact: Lanie Lane’s album *To The Horses* has not one, but two versions of the track "That's What You Get." It’s like she couldn’t decide which take was better, so she gave fans both! The album blends blues rock and country rock seamlessly, showcasing her versatility. Fun detail—Lanie Lane didn’t just sing on this record; she also took on the role of producer, making it a true passion project. Oh, and if you’re into credits, William Bowden mastered the whole thing, giving it that polished sound we love.

Lani Lane is awesome. I spent 45 minutes with her hanging out in LAX in June (LA to Melbourne flight). She showed me a clip she just filmed in Peru, as well as some of her music, which I totally dug. We had a great chat. Keeper.

It is said that she stops music career even though she has such an awesome talent. This world that a good musician like her is not rewarded is wrong. It's really sad. Anyway, I wish that she can return to a big stage.

Dig it! It was funny I saw this originally on no reservations and instantly thought she should work with the white stripes.. By the end of her song Anthony Bourdain said jack white produced her last song or something! Time for some iTunes!
