So Rare Jay-Dee’s Boogie Woogie: A Big Band Blast from the Past Alright, let me just say this—Jimmy Dorsey's So Rare Jay-Dee’s Boogie Woogie is like that old-school party guest who shows up uninvited but ends up being the life of the whole shindig. Released under TRIP and Trip Oldies (props to them for keeping these gems alive), this album is a toe-tapping mashup of Jazz and Pop with that unmistakable Big Band swagger. It’s got two tracks that’ll stick in your head longer than you’d expect: “So Rare” and “Jay-Dee’s Boogie Woogie.” Let’s dive into why they’re worth remembering. First off, “So Rare” hits you right in the feels. Like, imagine sipping on a soda float at some retro diner while daydreaming about someone way outta your league. The melody has this smooth, almost dreamy vibe, but it’s not all soft whispers—it’s got backbone. Jimmy Dorsey knew how to layer those horns so they didn’t just blare; they sang. You can practically hear the sax winking at you through the speakers. And the pacing? Just slow enough to make you swoon, but not so slow you start checking your watch. Honestly, if this track doesn’t give you goosebumps, you might need to check your pulse. Then there’s “Jay-Dee’s Boogie Woogie,” which is basically the wild cousin of “So Rare.” This one grabs you by the collar and says, “Hey, buddy, we’re dancing now!” The piano work here is INSANE—like, I’m talking fingers flying across keys faster than you can say “encore.” It’s impossible not to move when this tune kicks in. Whether you’re tapping your foot or full-on jitterbugging in your living room, it’s infectious energy bottled up in three minutes of pure joy. Plus, there’s something oddly satisfying about hearing an orchestra go full throttle without losing its groove. Respect. What makes this album stand out isn’t just the music itself—it’s the vibe. Listening to it feels like stepping back into a time when people dressed sharp, smoked cigars unironically, and danced like nobody was watching (even though everyone totally was). There’s no overproduced nonsense here, just raw talent doing what it does best. But here’s the kicker—listening to So Rare Jay-Dee’s Boogie Woogie made me realize something kinda funny. We live in a world where playlists are king, and songs barely get three minutes before we skip to the next thing. Yet here’s an album from decades ago proving that sometimes less really is more. Two tracks, zero filler, all killer. Maybe Jimmy Dorsey was onto something after all. Oh, and one last thought: If aliens ever invade Earth and demand proof of human creativity, I’d hand them this record. Not because it’s perfect, but because it’s real. Now go listen—you won’t regret it!

In the late 1950's, a 45rpm record called "Boogie Woogie #2" was a popular selection in the jukebox of my father's restaurant in Wailuku, Maui. Jimmy Dorsey and his band were the artists. I recall liking especially the quick interchange between the trombone and sax at 1:10! A clever arrangement, I thought!
Ed, Edd, N Eddy and Tom and Jerry vibes?
