The Loneliest Girl In Town by Little Miss Cornshucks: A Blues Gem That Still Hits Hard Alright, let’s talk about The Loneliest Girl In Town, the 1961 blues album by Little Miss Cornshucks. Released under Chess Records in the US, this record is one of those hidden treasures that sneaks up on you when you least expect it. If you’re into raw, heartfelt blues with a side of soul-crushing lyrics (in the best way possible), then this one’s for you. First off, can we just take a moment to appreciate how real this album feels? It’s like Little Miss Cornshucks is sitting right there across from you, spilling her guts over a cup of coffee. Her voice has this smoky, lived-in quality that makes every word sting—or soothe, depending on the track. And trust me, some of these songs will stick to your ribs long after the needle lifts off the record. Take “You Turned Your Back On Me,” for example. This tune grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go. The lyrics are simple but devastatingly effective—she lays out betrayal so plainly that it feels personal, like she’s telling your story. The slow-burning piano and steady rhythm give her vocals room to breathe, and boy, does she use that space well. By the time she hits the chorus, you’ll be nodding along even if you’ve never had someone turn their back on you (but who hasn’t, really?). It’s the kind of song that reminds you why blues music exists—to make sense of life’s messiest moments. Then there’s “Try A Little Tenderness.” Yeah, I know, plenty of folks have covered this classic, but Little Miss Cornshucks puts her own spin on it. Her version leans harder into the ache than most—you can hear the weariness in her voice as she pleads for understanding. There’s no glitz or glam here, just pure emotion laid bare. Honestly, it makes me wonder why more people don’t talk about her take on this song. It’s not flashy, but it’s authentic as hell. Other standouts include “Lonesomest Girl In Town” (which gives us all the feels) and “Never Let You Go,” where she flips the script and channels determination instead of despair. But honestly, the whole album flows together beautifully, like chapters in a novel you didn’t realize you needed to read. Here’s the thing: listening to The Loneliest Girl In Town feels like stepping into another era—an era where records were meant to be felt, not just heard. Little Miss Cornshucks may not have been a household name, but man, did she leave a mark with this one. So next time you’re feeling low or just need something to remind you that everyone’s got baggage, give this album a spin. Just don’t blame me if you end up crying in your car—it’s practically guaranteed. Oh, and fun fact? Apparently, Little Miss Cornshucks was known for wearing cornrow hairstyles during performances, which was pretty bold back then. Talk about owning your vibe!

Interesting fact about Album

Here's something cool: The album *The Loneliest Girl In Town* by Little Miss Cornshucks, released in 1961, is a hidden gem in blues history. It came out on Chess Records, the same label that launched legends like Muddy Waters and Etta James. One of its tracks, "Try A Little Tenderness," later became a massive hit for Otis Redding. But here’s the kicker—Little Miss Cornshucks’ version had a raw, soulful edge that set the stage for future covers. Not bad for an artist who didn’t get the mainstream spotlight she deserved!

My mother played the hell out of this gorgeous album. One of my best childhood memories was performing a skit in a talent show with her in 1980 ( age ten ) to “You Turned Your Back on Me” complete with costumes.

Thanks a million for posting this! I've heard all of Little Miss Cornshuck's 78rpm material, but never got to hear her Chess LP . . . until now. Great stuff! It's a pity she didn't record more.
