Little Wings - Light Green Leaves

Review by Jack Taylor

Light Green Leaves by Little Wings: A Quirky, Lo-Fi Journey Through Indie Folk Dreams If you’ve ever stumbled across an album that feels like it was made just for you, Light Green Leaves might be that record. Released in 2002 by Kyle Field under his Little Wings moniker, this gem floats effortlessly between genres—indie rock, folk, lo-fi, and even a touch of neofolk. It’s the kind of album that makes you want to sit cross-legged on your bedroom floor, headphones on, letting its scrappy charm wash over you. The album came out via K Records (a label known for championing weird and wonderful sounds) and Gnome Life Records. Mastered by Rob Jones and remastered later by John Golden, it has this warm, crackly vibe that feels intimate, like Kyle is whispering secrets directly into your ear. The credits are packed with quirky details, too—like Sienna Fawn Falk contributing lyrics to two tracks or Fletcher Tucker handling the design. These little touches make the whole thing feel handmade, like a gift wrapped in twine and love. Now, let me tell ya about two tracks that stuck with me long after the first listen: First up, there’s “Big Black Cloud (For The Microphones).” This one hits different because it’s not just catchy—it’s haunting. You can hear Kyle’s voice trembling slightly as he sings, layered over sparse instrumentation. It’s raw, almost fragile, but also powerful. I think what gets me is how personal it feels; it’s less of a song and more of a moment frozen in time. Plus, shoutout to Adam Selzer for mixing it so perfectly. There’s something about the way the guitar lingers in the background that makes it sound like it’s being played from another room—or maybe another dimension. Then there’s “Uh-Oh (It's Morning Again),” which pops up twice on the tracklist because apparently once wasn’t enough. And honestly? They were right. This tune is pure indie-pop gold, with a melody so simple yet addictive you’ll find yourself humming it hours later. It’s got this bittersweet energy, like waking up to sunlight streaming through your window but knowing you have to face the day anyway. The repetition works here—it mirrors the cyclical nature of mornings and goodbyes, y’know? What makes Light Green Leaves stand out isn’t just the music itself, though. It’s the way Kyle Field manages to blend chaos and calm into something cohesive. Tracks bleed into each other without warning, melodies loop back unexpectedly, and some songs feel unfinished—but that’s part of the magic. It’s messy in the best possible way, like flipping through someone’s sketchbook and finding beauty in every smudge and stray line. One thing that surprised me while diving into this album was realizing how much heart goes into even the tiniest details. From the piano outros scattered throughout to the cryptic titles like “First Try For Finding What Wonder,” it’s clear Kyle put everything he had into this project. And hey, maybe that’s why it resonates so deeply—it’s real, unpolished, and full of soul. So yeah, if you’re looking for an album that defies easy categorization and rewards repeat listens, give Light Green Leaves a spin. Just don’t expect perfection—expect humanity. Oh, and here’s a random thought to leave you with: If albums could be plants, this one would totally be a sprawling fern, growing wild and untamed in the corner of your living room.

  • These Recordings taken from Tape deck tapes I use to write songs. All of these versions are the first versions ever captured onto tape. They have also been recorded later in different set-ups and configurations. Many of these recordings are also merely early versions of what I was working on, and things that were never pursued or carried through to the next step. Words and melodies have later Been changed. Sienna Sang on "Light Green Leaves" and "Under Your Blanket" as we co-wrote those songs. Many "Note-To-Self" situations here in. I hope that this provides some background material for the process of making songs. To Be listened to by itself or in conjunction with the "Light Green Leaves" CD and LP versions, to create a more panoramic picture. Thanks to Sienna Fawn Falk for her input and Feedback during this time when these songs were all coming into their own. Recorded on a General Electric Tape Recorder model #3-5027. Once dropped from any distance, these machines tend to cease working, I now need a new one after said accident. Thanks to K and all therein For letting me make another Trilogy, Format specific this time.

  • In 2002, Kyle Field released Light Green Leaves on three formats (cassette, vinyl, CD). Each format bore different versions of the same songs in various states of refinement. The tape was solo demo recordings made on a hand-held recorder. The vinyl was loosey-goosey studio experimentation around the major themes. And the CD contained the polished precious stones. This latter, definitive version of Little Wings' indie classic Light Green Leaves is now available on vinyl for the first time ever.
  • The deluxe first pressing of this release comes in an uncoated, matte jacket foil-stamped with holographic pastel rainbow foil. Three 140 gram vinyl option were created: translucent green, translucent rust, and a blend of the two (this). This pressing is limited to 1,000 hand-numbered copies.
