Mentors - Live In Frisco

Live in Frisco by The Mentors: A Raw, Unapologetic Blast from 1987 Man, oh man, Live in Frisco is one of those albums that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. Released back in ’87 under Super Seven Record Company and Mystic Records, this punk-meets-heavy-metal beast screams raw energy. It’s not polished or fancy—it’s messy, loud, and dripping with attitude. And honestly? That’s exactly what makes it unforgettable. Let me start with “Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em” (or maybe it’s “Rock Em Sock Em”—who cares? The vibe’s the same). This track hits like a freight train. From the opening riff, you can feel your pulse quicken. There’s something about how sloppy yet tight the guitars are—it’s like they’re daring you to keep up. I swear, every time I hear it, I’m transported to some sweaty dive bar where everyone’s headbanging so hard they don’t even notice their beers spilling. It’s chaotic, sure, but in the best way possible. Like life itself, ya know? Then there’s “Having Sickie’s Baby.” Oh boy, this one sticks out for all the wrong reasons—and somehow, that’s perfect. The lyrics are wild, bordering on absurd, but delivered with such conviction that you can’t help but laugh along. You get the sense these guys weren’t trying to win any poetry awards; they just wanted to shock and entertain. And damn if it doesn’t work. By the second chorus, you’ll either be cringing or singing along at the top of your lungs. Probably both. Props to Denise Denise, whoever she was—her engineering chops gave this album its gritty edge. Nothing feels overproduced here. Every screech, every offbeat drum hit—it’s real. No filters, no apologies. Just pure rock fury straight from the US underground scene. Looking back, Live in Frisco isn’t gonna change your life or anything deep like that. But sometimes, music doesn’t need to be profound to matter. Sometimes, it just needs to kick ass and remind you to live a little dangerously. Listening to this record feels like flipping off authority while chugging cheap beer—it’s rebellious, reckless, and kinda beautiful. And hey, here’s a random thought: If aliens ever invade Earth and ask us to explain human emotions through music, we should totally play them this album. They’d probably think we’re insane—but isn’t that kind of the point?

The Mentors were formed in Seattle in 1976 and during the 1980s were the most controversial and hated of metal bands. The Parental Advisory stickers that exist on records are in part thanks to these guys. The Mentors were the band who's lyrics were quoted most often (for shock value) by conservative Christian Senators who held hearings on the floor of the U.S. Congress in order to determine how to censor the music industry. The Mentors infamously labeled their own music as "rape rock". El Duce died under mysterious circumstances after being hit by a train in 1997 days after claiming he had been hired to kill Kurt Cobain. The band's original line up was: Vocals/Drums: El Duce Guitar: Sickie Wifebeater Bass: Dr. Heathen Scum This line up stayed intact for most of the band's lifetime prior to El Duce's death, except for periods in the 1980s when Dr. Heathen Scum was in school. The group has continued since El Duce's death. The current line up is: Manuel Galdy (The Italian Stallion) -Drums El Chapo - Drums Adam - Guitar Paul Van Rijsijk- Guitar Dr. Heathen Scum - Bass, Vocals

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool tidbit: The album *Live In Frisco* by Mentors is a raw explosion of punk and heavy metal energy. Released in 1987, it captures the band's wild live performance vibe. What makes it even more unique? A woman named Denise Denise worked as the engineer, helping shape the sound of tracks like "Rock 'Em Sock 'Em" and "Having Sickie's Baby." Not many albums from that era can boast such a hands-on female presence behind the scenes. It’s a piece of rock history that feels both gritty and special.

So around 1989 I was in San Francisco - saw Mentors show @ some tiny dive down SOMA (South of Market) - place was a dump, like a warehouse ? but fairly packed - opening bands - then El Duce takes the stage & the guys rockin' with Peepin Tom, Goin' thru the Purse, 4F Club, etc and suddenly.... smoke. Fire ?? ? Some shit burnin' & Show is OVER ... just like my erection ?
