Born To Lose Live To Win: The Bronze Singles 1978-1983 – A Ripping Good Time If you’re a fan of raw, unfiltered rock with some heavy metal grit and proggy twists, Motörhead’s Born To Lose Live To Win: The Bronze Singles 1978-1983 is an absolute gem. Released in 1999 on the Raw Power and Castle Music labels, this compilation feels like rifling through a dusty box of vinyl treasures at your favorite record shop—except someone already did the hard work for you. It’s packed with tracks that remind you why Motörhead remains one of the most electrifying bands to ever crank up the volume. Let’s talk about two standout tracks here: “Ace of Spades” and “Overkill.” Honestly, if these songs don’t get your heart racing, check your pulse because something might be wrong. “Ace of Spades” hits like a freight train from the opening riff. Eddie Clarke’s guitar screams attitude, while Lemmy’s growl makes it clear he wasn’t messing around when he sang about living life on the edge. You can practically smell the smoke-filled bars where this track was born. Every time I hear it, I’m transported back to my teenage years, air-guitaring wildly in my bedroom (and probably annoying the neighbors). Then there’s “Onslaught,” err… sorry, “Overkill.” This tune is pure chaos wrapped in brilliance. Phil Taylor’s drumming? Insane. Like, how does anyone even keep up with that? The relentless energy just grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. It’s not just a song—it’s an experience. Whenever it comes on, I find myself shouting along like a lunatic, no matter where I am. Grocery store? Doesn’t matter. Singing into a cucumber as a makeshift mic is totally acceptable behavior when this track drops. The album also throws in live versions of classics like “Motorhead” and “Over The Top,” which add a whole new layer of intensity. And shoutout to the ladies who guested on tracks 7-1 to 7-3—Denise Dufort on drums and Enid Williams on bass bring serious firepower. Kelly Johnson’s vocals and lead guitar are killer too, adding a fresh twist to the mix. Hugh Gilmour’s art direction deserves props as well; the cover nails that gritty, rebellious vibe perfectly. What really stands out about this collection is how it showcases Motörhead’s evolution during those five years. From sleazy rockers like “Dirty Love” to fist-pumping anthems like “Bomber,” they weren’t afraid to experiment while staying true to their roots. Sure, some tracks feel rough around the edges—but isn’t that what makes them so damn lovable? Here’s the thing: listening to this album reminds me why music matters. It’s not about perfection or polish—it’s about passion. Motörhead played like their lives depended on it, and that urgency still jumps out of the speakers decades later. So grab a beer, turn the volume way up, and let yourself get lost in the chaos. Just don’t blame me if your neighbors start banging on the walls. Oh, and fun fact: apparently Kim McAuliffe once said she learned rhythm guitar by playing along to Motörhead records. How cool is that? Rock ‘n’ roll truly is one big family tree. Cheers to that!

Motörhead were an English rock band formed in June 1975 by bassist, singer, and songwriter Ian Fraser Kilmister (19452015), professionally known by his stage name Lemmy, who had remained the sole constant member. The band are often considered a precursor to, or one of the earliest members of, the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, which re-energised heavy metal in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Despite this, Lemmy had always dubbed their music as simply "rock and roll". To its end, Motörhead had released twenty-three studio albums, ten live recordings, twelve compilation albums and five EPs. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades, and particularly No Sleep 'til Hammersmith, cemented Motörhead's reputation as a top-tier rock band. As of 2012, Motörhead have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide. Motörhead are typically classified as Rock N Roll by Lemmy and band members, and their fusion of punk rock into the genre helped to pioneer speed metal and thrash metal. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse, and, most famously, gambling. The name "Motörhead" is a reference to users of the drug amphetamine. The band's distinctive fanged-face logo, with its oversized boar's tusks, chains, and spikes, was created by artist Joe Petagno in 1977 for the cover of the Motörhead album and has appeared in many variations on covers of ensuing albums. The fanged face has been referred to variously as "War-Pig" and "Snaggletooth". The band is ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. When Lemmy Kilmister died in December 2015, Mickey Dee declared that Motörhead (officially) is disbanded. No more tours or albums will be made. Only the brand will survive for the future. Last line-up: Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister (vocals, bass 1975-2015) Phil "Zoomster" Campbell (guitar, 1984-2015) Mickey Dee (drums, 1992-2015) Past members: Matt Sorum (touring drummer, 2009) Tommy Aldrigde (In studio recording most of the 'March Or Die' album, 1992) Michael "Wurzel" Burston (guitar, 1984-95) Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor (drums, 1975-84 / 1987-92) Pete Gill (drums, 1984-87) Brian Robertson (guitar, 1982-83) "Fast" Eddie Clarke (guitar, 1976-82) Larry Wallis (guitar, 1975-76) Lucas Fox (drums, 1975)
