Bon Voyage by McCoy Tyner, Avery Sharpe, Louis Hayes – A Jazz Journey Worth Taking Released in 1987 under the Netherlands-based Timeless Records, Bon Voyage is one of those albums that kinda sneaks up on you. It’s not flashy or overhyped, but man, does it deliver. With McCoy Tyner on piano, Avery Sharpe holding down the bass, and Louis Hayes laying down some seriously smooth drumwork, this record blends modal jazz with a touch of contemporary flair. Produced by Wim Wigt and engineered by Max Bolleman (who clearly knew what he was doing), it feels like a warm hug for your ears. Now, I gotta say, two tracks really stuck with me: “Blues For Max” and “Bon Voyage.” Let’s dive into why they’re so memorable. “Blues For Max” kicks things off with a vibe that’s both laid-back and intense at the same time. You can tell Tyner’s fingers are just dancing all over that piano—there’s this raw energy there, like he’s telling a story without saying a word. And then there’s Louis Hayes’ drumming—it doesn’t overpower, but instead adds these little sparks of rhythm that make you nod along even if you don’t mean to. The whole thing feels like an ode to someone special, maybe even the engineer Max Bolleman himself? Either way, it’s got soul. Then there’s the title track, “Bon Voyage.” This one hits different because it feels like stepping onto a boat and waving goodbye to the shore. There’s a sense of movement, you know? Tyner’s chords swell and ebb like waves while Avery Sharpe’s basslines keep everything grounded. It’s not too complicated, but sometimes simple is exactly what you need. By the end, you’re left feeling like you’ve been somewhere—even if that somewhere is just inside your own head. The rest of the album isn’t slacking either. Covers like “Summertime” and “How Deep Is The Ocean” get fresh takes that feel respectful yet totally original. And “Jazz Walk”? That’s just pure fun—a tune that makes you wanna grab a hat and stroll through the streets pretending you’re in some old-school noir flick. What strikes me most about Bon Voyage is how timeless it feels (pun kinda intended). Even though it came out in the late ‘80s, it doesn’t sound dated. Maybe that’s because jazz has this magical ability to transcend trends, or maybe it’s just that McCoy Tyner was a genius who could make anything sound golden. Here’s the random thought I’ll leave you with: Listening to this album feels like finding an old photograph tucked away in a drawer. At first glance, it seems ordinary—but the longer you look, the more details jump out at you. That’s Bon Voyage. Give it a spin. Who knows? It might become your next go-to when life gets hectic and you need something real to hold onto.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *Bon Voyage* by McCoy Tyner came out in 1987, but it wasn’t made in the U.S. It was recorded in the Netherlands under Timeless Records. Fun fact—Avery Sharpe on bass and Louis Hayes on drums brought such tight energy to the sessions that engineer Max Bolleman later said mixing felt almost effortless. Oh, and there’s a track called “Blues For Max,” which some fans think might actually be a nod to Bolleman himself. Neat, right?
