Seul Ensemble by Serge Fiori: A Wild Ride Through Soundscapes You Won’t Forget Alright, let’s cut the crap. Seul Ensemble is one of those albums that punches you in the gut and then whispers sweet nothings in your ear. Released back in 2019 under Sony Music Canada, this thing is a genre-bending beast—part pop, part rock, with dashes of neo-classical, prog rock, folk rock, and acoustic vibes. It's like someone threw all these styles into a blender and hit "puree." And guess what? It works. Mostly. First off, kudos to Serge Fiori for pulling together such a stacked lineup of talent. From Louis-Jean Cormier shredding on electric guitar to Alex Mc Mahon doing triple duty on piano, keyboards, AND drums (seriously, dude needs a medal), this album feels alive. The orchestration by Jean-Nicolas Trottier adds layers so rich you’ll think you’re listening to an epic film score at times. But enough about the credits—let’s talk tracks. Track Highlights That Hit Hard "L’Exil" This track? Holy hell. Right outta the gate, it grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. There’s something haunting about the strings—courtesy of Madeleine Messier, Mélanie Bélair, and crew—that just sticks with you. Like, I’ve had this melody stuck in my head for days now, and honestly, I don’t hate it. The lyrics are raw, almost desperate, but there’s also this weird sense of hope buried deep down. By the time the brass kicks in, you’re either crying or fist-pumping. Maybe both. Either way, it’s unforgettable. "Viens Danser" Okay, here’s where things get fun. If “L’Exil” is the moody older sibling, “Viens Danser” is the wild child throwing a party next door. This song straight-up demands you move. Between Guillaume Chartrain’s basslines and Louis-Jean Cormier laying down some groovy synth work, it’s impossible not to bob your head. Oh, and Kim Richardson’s backing vocals? Pure fire. They elevate the whole damn thing. What starts as a chill vibe turns into this chaotic explosion of sound that makes you wanna grab someone and spin ‘em around. No lie, I nearly tripped over my coffee table trying to dance to this one. --- Final Thoughts (And a Weird Reflection) So yeah, Seul Ensemble isn’t perfect. Some tracks drag a bit, and if you’re not into experimental stuff, you might find parts of it pretentious AF. But man, when it hits, it REALLY hits. It’s messy, emotional, and kinda brilliant in its own chaotic way. Here’s the kicker though—listening to this album made me realize how rare it is to hear music that actually tries to do something different anymore. Most artists play it safe, sticking to formulas that sell. Not Serge Fiori. He went full throttle, creating something that feels personal yet universal. Like, who else would mix prog rock with brass sections and make it WORK? Anyway, if you’re looking for background noise while folding laundry, skip this. But if you want an album that challenges you and leaves you feeling like you just survived an emotional rollercoaster, give Seul Ensemble a shot. Just don’t blame me if you end up dancing awkwardly in your living room. Oh, and P.S.—I still can’t figure out why they listed “L’Exil” twice. Was that intentional? Or did someone screw up? Either way, it’s kinda badass. Rating: 8/10 – Because perfection is boring anyway.
