Mario Fabriani - Schoolyard Shenanigans EP

Schoolyard Shenanigans EP by Mario Fabriani: A Deep Dive into House Music Magic Alright, buckle up, because we’re about to take a trip back to 2006—a year when flip phones were cool, MySpace ruled the internet, and Mario Fabriani dropped Schoolyard Shenanigans EP. Yeah, it’s an odd name for an album that’s all about smooth beats and late-night vibes, but hey, who are we to judge? Released on Jackin Tracks (a label that knows its way around house music), this little gem is packed with three tracks of pure electronic goodness. Let’s break it down. First off, let’s talk genre. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill house music; nope, it’s got layers. Think deep house grooves mixed with some funky undertones that make you wanna move even if you're sitting at your desk pretending to work. The whole thing was produced and written by Fabriani himself, which gives it this cohesive vibe—like he knew exactly what he wanted to say without overcomplicating things. And props to Matt Colton for mastering it so clean you can hear every kick drum like it’s whispering sweet nothings in your ear. Now, onto the tracks. I’ll spare you the play-by-play of all three and focus on my personal faves: What You Need and Disco Latino. These two stuck with me like gum on a hot sidewalk. What You Need kicks off the EP with a bassline so slick it feels like it just slid out of a ‘70s discothèque and into modern times. It’s one of those tracks where the groove sneaks up on ya—you think you’re just vibing casually, then BAM! Your feet have taken control and you’re doing some weird wiggle-dance in your kitchen. The beat builds steadily, teasing you with little synth stabs here and there until you’re fully hooked. It’s not trying too hard, but man, does it deliver. Honestly, I could listen to this track while folding laundry and somehow feel cooler than James Bond sipping a martini. Then there’s Disco Latino, which sounds like someone mashed up Studio 54 with a salsa club and sprinkled a bit of Miami magic on top. The percussion hits hard, and the rhythm has this infectious shuffle that makes you wanna grab the nearest lampshade—or person—and start spinning. There’s something delightfully retro about it, yet it still feels fresh enough to slap into any playlist today. It’s the kind of song that makes strangers smile awkwardly at each other on a crowded dance floor because they’re both thinking, “Damn, this is good.” As for The Groove Bug… well, let’s just say it’s fine. Not bad, not amazing—kinda like ordering plain toast at brunch. Sometimes simple works, but it doesn’t leave much of an impression. So, what’s the verdict? Schoolyard Shenanigans EP might not reinvent the wheel, but it sure knows how to spin it. If you’re into house or deep house, this is definitely worth a listen. Plus, the fact that it came out in 2006 kinda blows my mind—it feels timeless, like it could drop tomorrow and still turn heads. Here’s the kicker though: listening to this EP made me realize how rare it is to find music that’s both effortless and intentional. Most artists these days seem obsessed with being flashy or experimental, but Fabriani proves that sometimes less really is more. Or maybe I’m just biased because I accidentally spilled coffee on myself dancing to Disco Latino. Either way, check it out. You won’t regret it.
