NAx80 by Shishi: A Lithuanian Rock Odyssey That’s Not Quite Like the Others Alright, buckle up, because NAx80 by Shishi is one of those albums that feels like it crawled out of a smoky underground club in Vilnius and decided to slap you across the face with its weirdness. Released back in 2018, this self-released gem (props to Shishi for doing it themselves!) blends No Wave, Surf, and Post-Punk into a sound that’s as chaotic as it is strangely addictive. And let me tell ya, if you’re looking for something that doesn’t fit neatly into any Spotify playlist, this might just be your new favorite thing. First off, kudos to the band lineup—Dominyka Kriščiūnaitė pulling double duty on bass and vocals, Elena Neniškytė smashing drums, Giedrė Nalivaikaitė shredding on electric guitar, and Tomas Verbaitis mixing the whole shebang into something coherent. It’s raw, unfiltered, and kinda messy—but hey, so is life, right? Now, onto the tracks. There are some bangers here, but two stood out to me like neon signs in a foggy alley: “Çavasara” and “Human-Plant Communication.” Let’s start with “Çavasara,” which sounds like someone took a surf rock riff, threw it into a blender with post-punk attitude, and hit puree. The guitars have this jittery energy, like they can’t decide whether they wanna chill or freak out completely. Dominyka’s vocals float over the chaos like she’s narrating a fever dream about Istanbul (funny enough, there’s also a track called “Istanbul,” but we’ll get to that later). This song sticks in your head not because it’s catchy in the traditional sense, but because it’s so damn odd. You find yourself humming it while staring blankly at your coffee cup, wondering what exactly just happened. Then there’s “Human-Plant Communication,” which is basically the musical equivalent of talking to your houseplants after one too many espressos. It starts off slow and moody, almost like the plants are shy at first. But then BAM!—the tempo shifts, and suddenly it’s an all-out jam session between flora and fauna. Or maybe humans? Who knows. What I do know is that halfway through, I was convinced my cactus was trying to tell me something important. Spoiler alert: It wasn’t. The rest of the album keeps the vibe going strong. Tracks like “Don’t Talk” and “Oh God, I Get Up” bring the angsty goods, while “Love” wraps things up with a surprisingly tender finish. It’s like Shishi said, “Okay, we’ve tortured you enough—here’s a hug.” What really makes NAx80 stand out is how unapologetically Lithuanian it feels. Not in a cheesy folkloric way, but in its DIY ethos and refusal to conform. These ladies didn’t wait around for some big label to discover them—they made their own rules and stuck to ‘em. Respect. So, would I recommend NAx80? Absolutely—if you’re into music that challenges you, confuses you, and occasionally makes you laugh out loud. Listening to this album feels like being invited to a secret party where everyone speaks a different language, but somehow, you still understand each other. Final thought: If plants could write music, I’m pretty sure it’d sound a lot like NAx80. Maybe that’s why my fern has been looking extra perky lately. Coincidence? Probably not.
