Various - Laser Rock

Laser Rock: A Retro Gem That Still Shines Released in 1984, Laser Rock by Various Artists is a curious blend of rock and pop tunes that feels like a time capsule from the heyday of classic rock. Brought to life under the Realistic label in the US, this album doesn’t reinvent the wheel but instead delivers a solid mix of tracks that capture the vibe of the era. With hits like “Bark At The Moon” and “99 Red Balloons,” it’s hard not to get sucked into its nostalgic charm. Let’s talk about “Bark At The Moon” first. Ozzy Osbourne’s contribution to this compilation is nothing short of iconic. The track has that raw energy Ozzy fans love, with pounding drums and a guitar riff that feels like it could wake the dead. It’s one of those songs where you can almost picture the laser light shows at arena gigs back in the day. Even now, hearing it makes me wanna grab an air guitar and go wild. Then there’s “99 Red Balloons.” If you’ve ever been to a karaoke night, chances are someone belted this out at some point. Nena’s original version is unforgettable, and having it on this album adds a nice pop twist to the otherwise rock-heavy lineup. There’s something oddly haunting about the lyrics when you think about them—balloons causing global chaos? Wild. But it works so well with the synth-driven melody that you don’t even care how bizarre it is. Other tracks like “Dust In The Wind” and “I Want You To Want Me” round out the collection nicely, offering softer moments amidst all the high-energy rockers. And let’s not forget “Couldn’t Stand The Weather”—a bluesy standout that reminds us why Stevie Ray Vaughan was such a legend. What strikes me most about Laser Rock is how it manages to feel both dated and timeless. Sure, some production choices scream ‘80s (hello, gated reverb), but the emotions behind these songs still resonate today. It’s kinda funny how an album meant for casual listening ended up being a snapshot of what made music great back then. So yeah, if you’re into classic rock or just wanna relive some good ol’ memories, give Laser Rock a spin. Just don’t blame me if you find yourself humming “99 Red Balloons” for days. Oh, and here’s a random thought—why didn’t anyone ever make a sequel called Laser Chill? Missed opportunity, right?
