Album Review: Social Misfits by Mutant Squad Released in 2012 under Suspiria Records, Social Misfits is a raw and relentless thrash rock album from Spain’s Mutant Squad. It's the kind of record that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go until the last riff fades out. With its gritty production helmed by Pedro Mendes (who also engineered the album), mixed with precision by Daniel Cardoso, and wrapped up in Carla Arean’s striking design work, this album feels like a labor of love—and fury. The opening track, "Remember," hits hard right off the bat. Its chugging riffs are infectious, while the vocals have this raspy desperation to them, as if screaming at you to wake up. The song's energy is chaotic but controlled—a hallmark of good thrash—and it sticks in your head long after it ends. You’ll find yourself humming those sharp guitar lines hours later without even realizing it. Then there’s "Cannon Fodder," which might just be the standout cut on the album. This one leans heavier into groove-laden territory, balancing breakneck speed with moments of crushing heaviness. The machine-gun drumming keeps everything tight, while the lyrics spit venom about societal decay. There’s something oddly satisfying about how unapologetically pissed-off it sounds—it’s not polished or overproduced, and that’s exactly what makes it work so well. Tracks like "The Machine" and "Black Harvest" round out the album nicely, though they don’t quite hit the same highs as the first two. Still, they bring enough aggression and attitude to keep things interesting throughout. What stands out most about Social Misfits isn’t just its blistering musicianship or catchy hooks—it’s the vibe. Listening to this feels like stepping back into the underground clubs of the '80s where thrash was born, minus the nostalgia goggles. It’s dirty, loud, and brutally honest. Here’s the thing: for an album released over a decade ago, it still feels fresh today. Maybe because we’re all kinda social misfits in our own ways now, navigating a world that seems more chaotic than ever. Or maybe I’m reading too much into it—either way, crank this sucker up and let loose. Oh, and fun fact? If Pedro Mendes had decided to become a chef instead of producing music, this album would probably taste like burnt coffee and adrenaline. Not sure if that’s a compliment or not, but hey, it works.
