Album Review: Concerto N6 Pour Violon Opus 47 & More by Henri Vieuxtemps Alright, so here’s the deal—Henri Vieuxtemps might not be a household name like Beethoven or Mozart, but man, this album makes you sit up and pay attention. Released in 1997 (yeah, I know, it feels like forever ago), Concerto N6 Pour Violon Opus 47, Concerto N7 Pour Violon Opus 49, and Greeting To America Opus 56 is one of those records that sneaks up on you. It's classical with just enough post-modern flair to keep things interesting. And guess what? France’s Auvidis-Valois label did an awesome job putting this together. First off, let me say—the team behind this recording is stacked. You’ve got Gérard Poulet absolutely slaying it on violin, Pierre Bartholomée conducting with precision, and the Orchestre Philharmonique De Liège Et De La Communauté Française bringing all the drama. The whole thing was recorded by Emmanuelle Bailliet and Manuel Mohino, who clearly knew how to capture every note without making it sound too... polished? Like, overly perfect can sometimes suck the soul out of classical music, ya know? Now, onto the tracks. There are some real gems here, but two stood out for me personally: "Rondo - Final - Allegretto" from Concerto N6 and "Mélancolie: Andante Sostenuto." The "Rondo - Final - Allegretto" has this playful energy that grabs you right away. It’s fast-paced but still feels light, almost like watching someone dance barefoot through a field at sunset. Every time I hear it, I imagine old-school European aristocrats trying—and failing—to look cool while attempting fancy footwork at a ball. Not sure if that’s what Vieuxtemps intended, but hey, art’s subjective, right? Then there’s "Mélancolie: Andante Sostenuto," which hits different. This track slows things down and gets super introspective. It’s hauntingly beautiful, kinda like staring out a rain-speckled window when you’re feeling all moody and philosophical. Gérard Poulet’s violin work here is next-level; he doesn’t just play the notes—he tells a story. Honestly, listening to this made me question my life choices for a solid ten minutes. No joke. What really struck me about this album is how timeless it feels. Sure, it came out in ’97, but the compositions themselves were written ages ago. Yet they still resonate today. That says something about Vieuxtemps’ genius, doesn’t it? Plus, the mix of classical structure and these subtle post-modern twists keeps things fresh. Like wearing vintage clothes with modern sneakers—it shouldn’t work, but somehow it does. Oh, random thought: If this album were a person, it’d probably wear glasses perched low on its nose and quote poetry at dinner parties. Just saying. Anyway, give this one a listen if you’re into classical music that actually feels alive. Or even if you’re not—you might just find yourself falling for it anyway. Who knows? Maybe we’ll all meet again someday over another deep-cut classical gem. Until then, crank up the volume and enjoy the ride!
