Society Dog - Off Of The Leash

Review by Nicolas Schiavon

Off Of The Leash by Society Dog: A Raw Punk Gem That Still Bites Man, if you’re into the raw, unfiltered energy of punk and hardcore, Off Of The Leash by Society Dog is like a punch to the gut—in the best way possible. Released in 1981 on Subterranean Records, this album doesn’t mess around. It’s gritty, it’s pissed off, and it feels like it was recorded in someone’s garage after one too many beers. But that’s exactly why it works. Let’s talk about “The Baby Is Dead.” Holy crap, this track hits hard. From the opening riff—courtesy of Joe Dirt on guitar—you know you’re in for something heavy. The vocals from Johnithin Christ? They’re not pretty, they’re not polished—they’re desperate. Like he’s screaming at the world because no one else will listen. And when Bond Cobby chimes in with those backing vocals, it’s like chaos finding its harmony. This song sticks with me because it’s messy, loud, and kinda beautiful in its own messed-up way. You can almost picture the mosh pit forming as soon as the first note drops. Then there’s “On The Street,” which just slaps differently. D.D.’s drumming is relentless, driving the whole thing forward like a runaway train. Jamel Hell’s basslines are deep and dirty, adding this groovy undertone that sneaks up on you while all hell breaks loose on top. What gets me every time is how angry yet hopeful it feels. Yeah, it’s about being lost or stuck, but there’s this weird sense of defiance too, like saying, “Yeah, I’m on the street, but I ain’t going nowhere.” It’s the kind of song that makes you want to scream along even if you don’t know all the words. What’s wild is how real this record feels. Produced by Mike Fox and the band themselves, it’s got that DIY charm that screams early ‘80s underground rock. Margaret’s design and Johnithin’s cover art give it this scrappy aesthetic that matches the music perfectly. It’s like holding a piece of rebellion in your hands. Looking back, Off Of The Leash wasn’t trying to be anything other than what it was—a raw expression of frustration, freedom, and maybe a little fun. Listening to it now, decades later, it still feels alive. Maybe that’s why albums like this stick around—they remind us that music doesn’t have to be perfect to mean something. Oh, and here’s the kicker: I bet most people reading this weren’t even born when this came out. Weird, right? But hey, good art doesn’t care about timelines. It just wants to kick down doors—and damn, does this album ever.
