Album Review: Harhakuvat by Unkind – A Heavy, Raw, and Honest Ride If you’re into music that punches you in the gut while still making you think, Harhakuvat by Unkind is worth your time. Released back in 2011 on Relapse Records, this Finnish powerhouse blends Rock, Pop/Rock, Heavy Metal, Punk, and Hardcore into something that feels raw, unfiltered, and deeply personal. It’s not perfect, but damn if it doesn’t leave a mark. The album kicks off with "Johtajat Ja Uhrit," and holy crap, does it set the tone. The guitars hit hard, like someone just dropped a brick wall on your head, but there’s also this weird sense of melody sneaking through the chaos. Marko Heikura’s vocals are all over the place—growls, screams, and moments where he almost sounds like he’s pleading with you. What sticks with me about this track is how it balances aggression with emotion. Like, yeah, it’s heavy as hell, but there’s a sadness underneath that hits different. By the time the song ends, you’re left feeling like you’ve been through something… real. Another standout is "Ylpeä Perhe." This one gets under your skin with its relentless energy. The basslines from Marko Heikura (yep, he’s pulling double duty here) feel like they’re vibrating in your chest, while the drumming by Saku Tamminen keeps everything propulsive. But what really makes this track memorable is its lyrics—they’re sharp, cutting, and kinda make you reflect on your own life choices. Plus, there’s this haunting piano bit by Samae Koskinen that sneaks in halfway through, adding an eerie layer to the whole thing. It’s unexpected, sure, but it works. Now, let’s talk production for a sec. Kari Nieminen handled recording and mixing, and Joona Lukala mastered it. They did a solid job keeping things gritty without losing clarity. You can hear every cymbal crash, every string squeak, and even some random noises credited to Pekka Punkka (love that name, by the way). Jacob Speis nailed the artwork and layout too—it’s dark, chaotic, and fits the vibe perfectly. And shoutout to Eric Kaufman for the photography; those visuals tie the whole package together. One thing I gotta mention is how the band plays around with styles. Tracks like "Koulutettu Epäonnistumaan" bring that punk edge, while others lean more into hardcore or even touch on softer, almost melancholic tones. Sure, it might feel a little scattered at times, but isn’t that kind of the point? Life’s messy, and so is Harhakuvat. That’s what makes it relatable. Here’s the kicker though: listening to this album feels like hanging out with old friends who aren’t afraid to tell you the truth—even when it hurts. There’s no sugarcoating here, no shiny polish to distract you from the grit. It’s honest, loud, and sometimes ugly—but in the best possible way. And hey, fun fact: there’s a trombone solo by Onni Kaarle hidden in there somewhere. Trombone! In a metal/punk/hardcore album! Who would’ve thought? So yeah, Harhakuvat won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you dig music that challenges you and leaves a bruise, give it a spin. Just don’t blame me if you find yourself replaying “Ylpeä Perhe” on repeat for days.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know that the album *Harhakuvat* by Unkind is a wild mix of heavy metal, punk, and hardcore? Released in 2011 under Relapse Records, it’s got some serious grit. The same person, Marko Heikura, handles both bass and vocals, which isn’t something you see every day. And get this—there’s even a trombone featured on the album, played by Onni Kaarle. How many heavy albums can you say that about? The cover art and layout were done by Jacob Speis, tying the whole chaotic package together. It’s wild how much creativity went into this project!
