Livestock Management Strategies by Nothinghunger: A Noisy, Ambient Beast That Won’t Let Go Alright, let’s talk about Livestock Management Strategies. This 2017 release from Australian electronic outfit Nothinghunger is not your typical chill-out record. Nope. It’s more like a sonic cattle prod—sharp, disorienting, and kinda unforgettable. If you’re into noise, ambient textures, and industrial vibes mashed together in ways that feel both chaotic and calculated, this one might just burrow its way into your brain. First off, the album kicks off with “Illuminate,” and holy crap does it set the tone. Imagine being dropped into some dystopian factory where machines hum ominously while distant echoes of humanity struggle to break through. That’s what this track feels like—a slow-burn creepfest that builds tension without ever fully resolving it. You know those moments when you’re lying awake at night and random sounds start morphing into something sinister? Yeah, that’s “Illuminate.” I couldn’t shake it if I tried. The layers of distortion are so thick they almost suffocate you, but there’s this weird beauty lurking underneath, like rusted metal catching sunlight. It’s haunting as hell, and honestly, I love it. Then there’s “Livestock Management,” which hits harder than a steel door slamming shut. This track doesn’t mess around—it comes straight for your eardrums with grinding synths and pounding rhythms. There’s an aggression here that feels primal, like the music itself has claws. But it’s not all brute force; there are these fleeting moments of clarity buried deep within the chaos. Like, right around the two-minute mark, everything drops out for half a second, leaving only this eerie drone before the storm crashes back in. It’s jarring, sure, but also strangely satisfying, like finally exhaling after holding your breath too long. The production credits tell part of the story—Jael Edwards handled recording, mixing, and mastering, and damn, she nailed it. Every sound is razor-sharp yet drenched in grit, perfectly capturing the raw energy of the project. And can we take a sec to appreciate Luke Holland’s artwork? It’s bleak, abstract, and matches the vibe of the album down to the last pixel. What sticks with me most about Livestock Management Strategies isn’t just how abrasive it is—it’s how emotional it feels beneath all the noise. Sure, it’s challenging listen, but it’s also deeply human in its own twisted way. By the time you hit “Only For Slaves” (another banger), you realize this isn’t just music—it’s a statement. Or maybe a warning. Either way, it lingers. Here’s the thing though: listening to this album makes me wonder if cows secretly hate us. Like, seriously, what did we do to deserve their silent rage immortalized in sound form? Food for thought. So yeah, give Livestock Management Strategies a spin if you’re ready to have your ears rearranged. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.

About Nothinghunger

The project of Jael Edwards, Nothinghunger began in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1999 with primitive tape-collages influenced by classic industrial acts like Throbbing Gristle, SPK, NON, and Whitehouse. Expanding to a duo with the addition of Alexis Porter, the group moved towards more sophisticated instrumentation influenced by bombastic classical music and black metal, and released the "Entertente Kunst/Degenerate art" CDR EP. In 2001, Porter left the project and Edwards moved to Melbourne, Australia, where Nothinghunger went into stasis. During this four year period, Edwards acted as the vocalist for Melbourne black/death metal act Accursed, but has now returned to creating Nothinghunger material.
