The O'Jays - Money Money Money For The Love Of Money People Keep Tellin Me

Review by Barbara Schroeder

Alright, let’s get into it. The O’Jays dropped Money Money Money For The Love Of Money People Keep Tellin Me in 1973, and man, this thing still smacks harder than most of what’s out there today. Funk? Soul? Disco vibes so thick you could cut ‘em with a knife? Yeah, all that’s here, and then some. Released under Philadelphia International Records (you know, the label that basically invented smooth but gritty soul), this album is straight fire for anyone who digs raw grooves with a message. First up, “For The Love Of Money.” You’ve heard it before—you had to have heard it—but listening to it again feels like getting punched in the gut…in a good way. That bassline hits like a freight train, and Eddie Levert’s vocals are just dripping with attitude. It ain’t just about cash; nah, it’s deeper than that. They’re talking greed, corruption, how money twists people up inside. Every time I hear those iconic clinking coin sounds layered over the beat, I’m reminded why this track became timeless. It's not just music—it’s truth wrapped in funk, and it slaps HARD. Then there’s “People Keep Tellin’ Me,” which sneaks up on you slow at first, almost whispering its way into your brain. But once it locks in, damn, it stays there. This one’s got more of a laid-back groove compared to the explosive energy of “For The Love Of Money,” but don’t mistake chill for weak. The harmonies hit different, real tight, and the lyrics stick because they’re relatable as hell—folks always telling you what to do, pushing their opinions on you. Haven’t we all been there? It builds steadily, pulling you deeper until you realize you’ve been nodding along for five minutes without even noticing. What makes this album stand out isn’t just the killer tracks or the production quality—it’s the vibe. These guys weren’t messing around when they went into the studio. France might seem random for releasing this gem, but honestly, who cares where it came from? Good music doesn’t need borders. And yeah, sure, the title’s a mouthful, but screw it—it works. Here’s the kicker though: if you listen closely, you’ll notice something kinda wild. These songs aren’t just throwback jams—they’re warnings. About greed, about losing yourself, about letting other people dictate your life. Heavy stuff, right? Makes you wonder if maybe these dudes knew exactly where society was headed. Or maybe they were just calling out what they saw back then. Either way, it lands. So yeah, crank this album loud enough, and you’ll feel every note punch through your chest. Just don’t blame me if you start questioning your bank account—or your whole existence—afterward.

About The O'Jays

The group was originally formed as in Canton, Ohio in 1958 by gospel duo Eddie Levert (b. June 16, 1942) and Walter Williams (b. August 25, 1943). Also featuring William Powell (b. January 20, 1942 -d. May 26, 1977) , Bobby Massey and Bill Isles, The Mascots made their recording debut in 1961 with "Miracles." The group made quite an impression on Cleveland D.J. Eddie O'Jay, who played their single often and gave them career advice. In return, they paid tribute to him by renaming themselves The O'Jays. Inducted into Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 (Performer).
