Review by Ryan Minney

Nujanode by Økapi: A Downtempo Dive into the Experimental Unknown Alright, let’s talk about Nujanode, the 2016 gem from Italian electronic artist Økapi. Released under Looney Moon Records (cool name, right?), this album feels like a late-night drive through an alien city—neon lights flickering, strange vibes in the air, and that feeling you’re not entirely sure what’s real anymore. With downtempo beats and experimental twists, it’s got layers you can peel back over and over again. And shoutout to Funi Nini for the artwork—it’s as trippy as the music itself. Now, onto the tracks. There are four total: "Nujanode," "Bitrudo-Nai," "Immagol," and "Sroinide." But two of them stuck with me like gum on a shoe. First up is "Nujanode", the title track. It starts off slow, almost lazy, but then these glitchy textures creep in like whispers from another dimension. The rhythm isn’t aggressive; it’s more like a heartbeat that skips every now and then. I kept coming back to it because it feels like a soundtrack for staring out a rainy window while your brain drifts somewhere far away. You know those moments when life slows down just enough for you to think? Yeah, that’s “Nujanode” in a nutshell. Then there’s "Immagol"—this one hit different. It’s darker, moodier, like wandering through a forest at night without a flashlight. The bassline rumbles beneath sharp, fragmented melodies that sound like they’re breaking apart even as they play. It reminds me of trying to piece together a dream after waking up—you catch flashes of something meaningful, but the whole picture stays elusive. Honestly, I couldn’t get it out of my head for days. Not because it’s catchy in a pop-song way, but because it’s haunting. Like, you’ll be making coffee or brushing your teeth, and suddenly you hear it looping in your mind. What makes this album stand out isn’t perfection—it’s personality. Økapi doesn’t seem interested in polishing everything until it shines. Instead, they embrace imperfections, letting glitches and weird sounds exist alongside smooth rhythms. It’s raw, unpredictable, and kinda beautiful. Here’s the thing though: listening to Nujanode feels like stepping into someone else’s dream. And maybe that’s why it lingers. Or maybe it’s just the fact that no matter how many times I listen, I still can’t figure out if “Bitrudo-Nai” is supposed to make me feel calm or slightly anxious. Either way, it works. Final thought? If aliens ever land on Earth and ask us to explain human creativity, we should hand them this album. They might not understand it, but hey, neither do we—and that’s the point.
