Orbital - The Saint

Review by Kamil Strauss

Orbital’s The Saint: A Sonic Punch to the Gut Let’s cut the crap. Orbital didn’t just drop an album in 1997—they unleashed a beast called The Saint. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill electronic record; it’s a genre-bending, brain-melting masterpiece that refuses to sit still. With its roots tangled deep in ambient, techno, trance, and breakbeat vibes, this thing hits like a freight train on steroids. And yeah, it’s got enough leftfield twists to keep even the snobbiest IDM nerds glued to their headphones. Now, let me get one thing straight: I don’t remember every track here, but when something sticks, it sticks. Take “The Sinner (Industry Standard),” for instance. Holy hell, this tune is pure chaos wrapped in melody. It starts off all moody and brooding, like someone sneaking through shadows, then BAM—it explodes into this relentless techno assault. You can practically feel the sweat dripping off the walls of some dingy club where this would’ve been blasting back in the day. It’s not just music; it’s a full-body experience. If you’re not moving by the halfway mark, check your pulse—you might be dead. Then there’s “Satan (Live In NYC).” Jesus Christ, what a wild ride. This version takes the original track and cranks it up to eleven, injecting raw energy that feels alive. The pounding beats are relentless, the synths scream like banshees, and the whole thing builds into this apocalyptic crescendo that leaves you breathless. Listening to it feels like being chased through a neon-lit labyrinth by something you can’t see. It’s messy, chaotic, and absolutely brilliant. That’s the kind of madness only Orbital could pull off without sounding pretentious. Credit goes to P&P Hartnoll, who produced and arranged this monster. These dudes clearly weren’t messing around—they crafted each track with surgical precision while leaving room for that organic, human touch. Props also to whoever mastered this beast (RCE, if you’re wondering), because the sound quality slaps harder than most albums from that era. Even the artwork, handled by Fultano Mauder, fits perfectly—a stark, minimalist design that mirrors the cold intensity of the music inside. What makes The Saint stand out isn’t just its technical brilliance or genre-hopping insanity—it’s how unapologetically aggressive it feels. There’s no pandering here, no attempts to soften the edges for mainstream appeal. Orbital went full throttle, creating something that punches you in the face and dares you to hit play again. And trust me, you will. So yeah, this album dropped over two decades ago, but it still hits harder than half the stuff coming out today. Maybe that says more about modern music than we’d like to admit. Or maybe Orbital were just ahead of their time, crafting a timeless piece of art that refuses to fade into obscurity. Either way, The Saint deserves a spot in any self-respecting music lover’s collection. Oh, and one last thing—don’t listen to this sober. Just saying.
