Album Review: Stabat Mater by Pergolesi (1970 Release) If you’re into classical music that feels like it’s straight out of a cathedral or an ancient opera house, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater is the kind of album that’ll grab your soul and not let go. Released in 1970 across a bunch of countries—seriously, from the Netherlands to Hungary, this thing got around—it’s one of those timeless pieces that just keeps resonating. The version I’m reviewing here features Vasil Kazandiev conducting the Bulgarian Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra, with some absolutely stunning vocal performances. It’s labeled under genres like Non-Music and Classical, but honestly? This is music that defies labels. What Makes It Special First off, let me say this: if you’ve never heard Baroque choral music before, prepare for goosebumps. This isn’t background noise; it’s front-and-center emotional storytelling. The whole album is packed with tracks that hit hard, but two stood out to me so much they stuck in my brain like gum on a shoe. Track Highlight 1: “O Quam Tristis Et Afflicta” Okay, so this track? Wow. Just… wow. It starts off slow and mournful, like someone’s heart is breaking right there in front of you. Neli Bozhkova’s mezzo-soprano voice carries this haunting sadness that feels almost too real. You don’t need to understand Latin to feel what she’s singing about—it’s all in the delivery. And then when the choir joins in? Forget it. It’s like being wrapped up in layers of velvet sorrow. Every time I hear this one, I think about big cathedrals and candlelight flickering against stone walls. It’s heavy, man. Heavy in the best way possible. Track Highlight 2: “Fac Ut Portem Christi Mortem” This alto aria sung by Julia Hamari is another showstopper. There’s something about her tone—it’s rich and deep, like dark chocolate melting slowly. The lyrics talk about carrying Christ’s death in your own heart, which sounds super intense (and yeah, it is), but the melody softens the blow. It’s both comforting and devastating at the same time. Like, how does that even work? I found myself rewinding this track multiple times because it felt like every listen revealed something new. Plus, the string section backing her up adds this delicate shimmer that makes the whole thing sparkle, even though it’s still kinda sad. Why You Should Care What’s wild about Stabat Mater is how universal it feels. Even though it was written centuries ago, the emotions are still fresh. Whether you’re into religious themes or just appreciate beautiful compositions, this album has something for everyone. The mix of soloists, duets, and full choir moments keeps things dynamic, and the production quality holds up surprisingly well for a 1970 recording. Big props to engineers like Miloslav Kulhan and Eduard Herzog for making sure every note shines through. The credits list reads like a who’s who of talent—everyone from Tiha Genova’s soprano vocals to the RIAS-Kammerchor adding their magic touch. And can we talk about the design? Gábor Molnár’s graphics give the album cover this vintage charm that matches the music perfectly. It’s clear a lot of love went into putting this together. Final Thoughts Listening to Stabat Mater feels like stepping into a different world—one where time slows down and everything matters more. Sure, it’s technically a religious piece, but you don’t have to be religious to connect with it. At its core, it’s about pain, love, and hope—all things we can relate to. Here’s the unexpected part: while writing this review, I realized how rare it is to find music that makes you stop scrolling, put down your phone, and just listen. That’s exactly what this album did for me. So yeah, maybe give it a shot next time you need a break from playlists full of bops and beats. Who knows? You might end up crying in the shower over a 300-year-old composition. And honestly? That’s kinda beautiful. Rating: 9/10 – Because sometimes perfection needs a little imperfection to feel human.

About Pergolesi

Italian Baroque violin player, organist & composer. Born January 4, 1710 in Jesi (Ancona) Italy, died March 16 or 17, 1736 in Pozzuoli (Napoli) Italy. Pergolesi composed serious and comic operas, interludes, oratories, cantatas, sacred music, instrumental music, but it was "La serva padrona" and "Stabat Mater" that ensured him undying fame. "La serva padrona" is the masterpiece of comic theater, which later became the model of this musical genre, later followed by musicians such as Mozart and Rossini.

One standout version was released in 1970, featuring an international effort with contributions from countries like Italy, Germany, and even Czechoslovakia. The album brought together a stunning lineup of talent, including conductor Vasil Kazandiev and mezzo-soprano Neli Bozhkova, alongside the Bulgarian Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra. What’s wild is how this sacred work, originally composed in the early 18th century, continues to resonate through time—performed in styles ranging from operatic duets to haunting choral arrangements. Per me è l'edizione migliore considerata universalmente un capolavoro è quella Diretta dal maestro Abbado con Margareth Marshall e Lucia Valentini Terrani del 1986; riconosco che anche questa è molto valida ??
