Album Review: "I'm Yours, You're Mine" by Betty Carter (1996) Alright, let’s talk about I’m Yours, You’re Mine, the 1996 jazz gem from Betty Carter. If you’re into vocal jazz with some serious bop vibes, this one’s gonna grab your attention. Released under Verve Records and recorded in both the US and Europe, it's got that timeless Betty Carter magic—raw, soulful, and just a little bit unpredictable. First off, big props to the crew behind this album. Curtis Lundy and Matt Hughes on bass? Smooth as butter. Gregory Hutchinson on drums? Tight and swingin’. And Xavier Davis on piano? Dude knows how to set the mood. Throw in Mark Shim on tenor saxophone and Andre Hayward on trombone, and you’ve got yourself a full-blown jazz party. Oh, and shoutout to Joe Ferla for mixing and Greg Calbi for mastering—these tracks sound crisp even through cheap headphones. Now, onto the songs. The tracklist is solid all around, but two tunes really stuck with me: “East of the Sun” and “I’m Yours, You’re Mine.” Let’s break ‘em down real quick. “East of the Sun” feels like slipping into a warm bath after a long day. Betty’s voice glides effortlessly over the melody, and there’s this cool interplay between her vocals and the band. It’s not trying too hard—it’s just good, clean jazz storytelling. That moment when the sax comes in? Pure goosebumps. This song reminds me why Betty Carter was such a powerhouse; she doesn’t need flashy tricks to knock you out. Then there’s the title track, “I’m Yours, You’re Mine.” Man, this one hits different. It’s intimate, almost like she’s whispering secrets directly to you. There’s a playful tension in the lyrics, and her delivery makes it feel like every word matters. Plus, the rhythm section is locked in so tight, it’s impossible not to tap your foot along. I kept replaying this one because it felt like discovering something new each time. One thing worth mentioning is how cohesive everything sounds. From the photography by Anthony Barboza (which, side note, perfectly captures Betty’s vibe) to the production managed by Ora Harris, it feels intentional without being stiff. Even the credits tell a story—Betty didn’t just sing here; she produced the whole damn thing. Respect. So yeah, I’m Yours, You’re Mine isn’t just another jazz album. It’s a masterclass in artistry and authenticity. Listening to it feels like sitting in a smoky club somewhere, completely lost in the music. Honestly, if Betty Carter were still around today, I’d beg her to drop a remix version of “Useless Landscape.” Can you imagine what she could do with modern beats? Anyway, give this album a spin if you haven’t already. Just don’t blame me if you end up humming “East of the Sun” for days.

Jule Styne wrote a lot of songs with "Time" in the title, but not this one. It's by Paul Weston (music) and Joel Benton (lyric).
