Baklänges På Nilen by Peter R Ericson – A Retro Swedish Gem That Still Hits Alright, let’s talk about Baklänges På Nilen, the 1989 album from Swedish artist Peter R Ericson. It’s one of those records that kinda sneaks up on you—released under Not On Label and Skivbolaget, it blends pop and rock in a way that feels like a time capsule from late '80s Sweden. And honestly? It’s pretty damn charming. The standout track for me has to be “Ingen Mogen Kvinna.” I mean, come on, the title alone grabs your attention (translation: "No Mature Woman"). The song kicks off with this punchy guitar riff that just sticks in your head like gum on a shoe. It’s got this raw energy to it, not too polished but full of character. You can tell Ericson wasn’t trying to reinvent the wheel here—he just wanted to make something catchy as hell. And dude succeeded. Every time I hear it, I’m reminded of driving around in an old Volvo with the windows down, even though I wasn’t even born when this came out. Weird, right? Then there’s the title track, “Baklänges På Nilen” (“Backwards on the Nile”). This one is wild because it’s got this quirky vibe that feels like Ericson decided to throw caution to the wind. The lyrics are playful, almost absurd, but they work. Like, who else would write a song about floating backwards down the Nile? Only someone unafraid to get weird. The melody bounces along, and before you know it, you’re humming it while doing dishes or whatever boring thing you’re stuck doing. What makes this album stick with me isn’t just the tunes—it’s how unpretentious it feels. There’s no overthinking here, no desperate attempt to chase trends. Ericson seems content to do his own thing, and that honesty shines through. Sure, some parts sound dated now, but that’s part of its charm. It’s like hanging out with an old friend who tells great stories but doesn’t take themselves too seriously. Here’s the kicker though—listening to this album made me realize how much we could use more music like this today. Stuff that’s fun without being try-hard, creative without needing to prove anything. Honestly, if Peter R Ericson dropped a new album tomorrow, I’d buy it in a heartbeat. Maybe he should team up with some indie band and drop a remix of “Ingen Mogen Kvinna”? Just saying, the world needs more quirky Swedish rock vibes. Anyway, check out Baklänges På Nilen if you’re into retro sounds or just want something different. Trust me, it’s worth a spin—or three.
