Eucalyptus 7 by Pitchfork: A Time Capsule of Chaos and Creativity Let’s get one thing straight—Pitchfork’s Eucalyptus 7 isn’t your typical rock album. Released in 1990 via Nemesis Records, this sucker dives headfirst into the mosh pit of punk, math rock, and hardcore like it's on a mission to break every rule in the book. And honestly? It kinda does. The first track that grabs you by the throat is "Burn Pigs Burn." Right off the bat, John’s guitar work feels like someone lit a firecracker under his amp. The riffs zigzag all over the place, unpredictable as hell, while Rick’s vocals scream raw emotion without holding back. You can almost picture Joey going full beast mode on the drums here—it’s messy but magnetic, chaotic yet calculated. This song sticks with you because it doesn’t just ask for your attention; it demands it. There’s no chill pill big enough to calm down the adrenaline rush this track gives you. Then there’s “Flatland Farming,” which flips the script entirely. For a band known for their wild energy, this tune sneaks up on you with its weird groove. Nick’s basslines slither through the mix like snakes on a hot tin roof, locking into Richard Andrews’ tight production (at least for tracks 1-8). It’s got this oddball charm that makes you bob your head even though you’re not sure if you’re supposed to. By the time the last note fades out, you realize you’ve been hypnotized by something that shouldn’t make sense—but totally does. Credit where it’s due: everyone involved crushed it. From Michael James nailing the recording sessions to Rick Fork crafting artwork that screams DIY rebellion, the whole package feels authentic. Even Don stepping in for those final three tracks adds an extra layer of grit to the bass department. Oh, and let’s not forget John wearing multiple hats—producer, mixer, guitarist—he was basically the Swiss Army knife of this project. What strikes me most about Eucalyptus 7 is how unapologetically itself it is. In a world obsessed with polish and perfection, this album says, “Nah, we’re good.” It’s rough around the edges, sure, but that’s exactly what makes it unforgettable. Listening to it feels like stumbling upon some long-lost treasure chest buried in a forgotten corner of music history. And hey, fun fact: goats apparently inspired at least one song title (“Goat”). Makes me wonder if they had a pet goat hanging around the studio or something. Either way, I’m into it. So yeah, give Eucalyptus 7 a spin if you want to hear punk-meets-math-rock insanity done right. Just don’t blame me if your neighbors start complaining about the noise.

If this record was release now, Pitchfork would be indie rock stars! Nobody was ready for this, including myself, in 1990. I started listening to Eucalyptus again recently. Pretty damn awesome.
