Chopper Original Mix / Dirty Chopper by Ray Keith – A Drum ‘n’ Bass Gem That Still Kicks (2004) Alright, buckle up, because we’re diving into Chopper Original Mix / Dirty Chopper, a two-track EP from the legendary Ray Keith. Released in 2004 on Dread Recordings, this slice of UK drum ‘n’ bass is like finding an old mixtape at the back of your closet—dusty but still fire. Produced and written entirely by Ray Keith (with some mastering magic by Neil and engineering finesse from Nookie), it’s one of those releases that reminds you why drum ‘n’ bass isn’t just music; it’s a vibe. Let’s break it down track by track—or rather, vibe by vibe—because there are only two songs here, but damn, they pack a punch. Track 1: “Chopper (Original Mix)” Oh man, where do I even start with this one? From the moment it kicks in, you’re hit with these razor-sharp breaks that feel like someone strapped a jet engine to a rollercoaster. The bassline? Pure filth. It growls and rumbles like it’s got something to prove, which makes sense since this was 2004—the golden era when producers were basically trying to outdo each other in making beats that could shake walls. What sticks with me about “Chopper” is how effortlessly smooth it feels despite being so chaotic. Like, yeah, there’s madness everywhere—breakbeats chopping faster than my Wi-Fi connection during a storm—but somehow it all clicks together perfectly. You can tell Ray Keith wasn’t messing around when he wrote this. It’s not just a banger; it’s a statement. If you’ve ever wanted to feel like you’re racing through London streets late at night while dodging raindrops, this is your jam. Track 2: “Dirty Chopper” Now THIS one’s wild. Imagine if “Chopper (Original Mix)” went rogue and decided to get even grittier—that’s “Dirty Chopper.” This remix takes everything great about the original and cranks it up another notch. The drums hit harder, the bass gets nastier, and suddenly you’re not sure whether you should be dancing or ducking for cover. Honestly, it’s kind of brilliant. I remember listening to this track for the first time and thinking, “Wait…is this legal?” There’s this raw energy to it, like Ray Keith just threw caution to the wind and said, “Screw it, let’s make something dangerous.” And boy, did he deliver. Whether you’re spinning it in a club or blasting it in your headphones, “Dirty Chopper” grabs hold of you and doesn’t let go. It’s the kind of tune that leaves you breathless—and maybe slightly terrified—but in the best way possible. --- Final Thoughts So yeah, Chopper Original Mix / Dirty Chopper might only have two tracks, but both slap hard enough to leave a lasting impression. Ray Keith proved once again why he’s a heavyweight in the drum ‘n’ bass scene. Sure, it came out nearly two decades ago, but good music doesn’t age—it evolves. And honestly? Listening to this EP feels like rediscovering an old friend who still owes you twenty quid but tells killer stories, so you forgive them anyway. Weird analogy? Maybe. But hey, weird analogies are what happen when you listen to too much drum ‘n’ bass. If you haven’t heard this yet, stop whatever you’re doing and give it a spin. Just don’t blame me if your neighbors complain—they probably won’t understand the artistry behind those filthy basslines.

DJ/ producer from Colchester, UK. From rare-groove to acid-house to hardcore to jungle, Ray Keith remained one of the most steady DJs on England's breakbeat scene during the 1980s and '90s. After a remix of Orbital's "Chime," he moved into production with apparent ease and became a respected drum'n'bass label-head as well. Keith began DJing soul, hip-hop and rare-groove around Essex and Suffolk in the mid 1980s until the acid house and hardcore explosion of the late '80s and early '90s. His first break playing house was at Oscars in Clacton-On-Sea. He then became a resident at The Crazy Club at the Astoria and latterly Innersense & Movement, as well as now owning the Best Of British organisation. He has had his own radio show on Vibe FM, alongside occasional shows on Kiss FM. By the middle of the '90s, he had become one of the most inspired drum'n'bass DJs and remixers. His own productions, including the jump-up anthem "Terrorist" began taking center stage by the mid-'90s and Keith formed three separate labels -- Penny Black, Dread and UFO -- in 1996. He has worked in close association with Gavin Cheung (aka Nookie) and also works at one of the premiere dance shops in Britain, Black Market Records (after leaving City Sounds). In 1997 he set up a new label -- Dub Dread --, and by 2003 had co-founded a DJ agency, Dread Entertainment Agency alongside his partner, Lena. Keith released the Penny Black collection Breakage, Vol. 1 in 1997, followed by a solo debut of sorts, 1999's UFO Presents Contact. His nephew is .
