Alpha The Family by Robert Hood: A Techno Beast That Kicks You in the Chest Alright, let’s get this straight—Robert Hood didn’t come to play with Alpha The Family. This 2011 techno banger from the US is one of those albums that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. Released on M-Plant, Hood’s own label, it’s raw, unapologetic, and hits harder than a punch to the gut. If you’re into electronic music but haven’t heard this yet, you’re sleeping on something special. First up, “The Family.” Damn. This track is like a heartbeat for robots—steady, mechanical, but dripping with soul. It builds slow, teasing you with these tight kicks and eerie synths before exploding into this relentless groove that just owns your ass. I remember spinning this late at night, windows down, feeling like the whole city was tuned into my car stereo. Hood knows how to make minimal sound massive, and this cut proves it. No fluff, no filler—just pure Detroit grit. Then there’s “Alpha (James Ruskin Remix).” Oh man, James took Hood’s original and turned it into a weapon. The bassline? Vicious. The percussion? Like hail hitting steel. This remix flips the vibe completely, turning Alpha into a darker, more industrial monster. It’s not just dance floor fodder—it’s war music for the underground. Every time I hear it, I think about abandoned warehouses and strobe lights flickering like dying stars. Ruskin didn’t just remix; he reimagined. Respect. Props to Patrick Vogt for the design—it’s simple, sharp, and matches the album’s stripped-down ethos. And tph nailed the mastering, making sure every kick drum feels like it’s coming through your chest cavity. These details matter when you’re dealing with an album as brutal and beautiful as this one. So yeah, Alpha The Family isn’t perfect, but who cares? Perfection’s overrated anyway. What it is, though, is honest. It’s the kind of record that reminds you why techno exists—to shake foundations, both physical and mental. Funny thing is, listening to it now makes me realize something: we don’t need more polished crap cluttering our playlists. We need chaos. We need noise. We need albums like this to remind us what real music sounds like. And hey, if you don’t agree, maybe techno just ain’t your thing. Suit yourself. But don’t say I didn’t warn ya.

Robert Hood makes minimal Detroit techno with an emphasis on soul and experimentation over flash and popularity. Having recorded for , as well as the Austrian label and ' label. Hood started in 1991 (Robert Hood's first label prior to forming M-Plant) and also owns and operates the imprint (including the two sublabels Drama and Duet) through which he has released the bulk of his solo material. Hood was a founding member, along with Jeff Mills and Mike Banks, of the label, whose influential releases throughout the early and mid-'90s helped change the face of modern Detroit techno and sparked a creative renaissance. Infusing elements of acid and industrial into a potent blend of Chicago house and Detroit techno, UR's aesthetic project and militant business philosophy were (and remain) singular commitments in underground techno. Hood left Detroit (and UR) with Jeff Mills in 1992, setting up shop in New York and recording a series of 12" EPs. Through the mid-'90s, Hood has focused on his solo work, setting up M-Plant in 1994 and releasing singles such as "Internal Empire
