Review by Jibrin Reuben

The Scott Joplin Ragtime Album by Ronnie Price: A Timeless Spin on Classic Tunes If you’re a fan of jazz with that toe-tapping ragtime flair, The Scott Joplin Ragtime Album by Ronnie Price is one you’ll want to check out. Released back in 1974 in the UK under Embassy Records, this album feels like stepping into an old-timey dance hall where everyone’s dressed sharp and ready to cut loose. It’s not flashy or overproduced—it’s just good, solid music that makes you smile. Ronnie Price leads the charge on piano, backed up by some seriously talented folks: Joe Mudele holding down the bass, Derek Price keeping rhythm on drums, and Terry Walsh pulling double duty on guitar and banjo. The whole thing has this warm, inviting vibe, like someone invited you to sit by the fire while they played their favorite tunes. Rex Oldfield even chimes in with liner notes that give the project a nice personal touch. Now, let’s talk tracks because there are some real gems here. First off, “The Entertainer.” You’ve probably heard it before—it’s one of those instantly recognizable melodies that sticks in your head for days. Ronnie Price nails it without trying too hard; his fingers glide across the keys like he was born to play it. There’s something about how lively yet smooth it feels—it’s impossible not to hum along. And then there’s “Solace,” which hits different. It’s slower, moodier, almost melancholy but still kinda comforting. When I hear it, I imagine sitting on a porch at sunset, thinking about life. It’s simple, but man, does it hit the spot. What really stands out about this album is how authentic it feels. These musicians aren’t reinventing the wheel—they’re honoring Scott Joplin’s original compositions while adding their own little twists. It’s respectful but never boring. Plus, hearing Terry Walsh switch between guitar and banjo adds layers you might not expect. It’s fun! By the time you get through all twelve tracks (yeah, there’s plenty to enjoy), you’ll feel like you’ve been hanging out with old friends. This isn’t groundbreaking stuff, sure, but sometimes you don’t need groundbreaking—you just need something honest and well-made. Oh, and here’s a random thought: listening to this album makes me wonder what Scott Joplin would think if he could hear it today. Would he nod approvingly? Or maybe crack a joke about how these Brits got hooked on his American sound? Either way, I bet he’d dig it. So go ahead, give The Scott Joplin Ragtime Album a spin. Whether you’re into jazz, history, or just looking for something chill to brighten your day, this record’s got you covered.
