Album Review: "A Woman's Way / Mine Was Real" by Rozetta Johnson Rozetta Johnson’s A Woman’s Way / Mine Was Real is one of those hidden gems from the soulful era of 1970 that you stumble upon and can’t stop playing. Released under ClinTone Records, this funk/soul masterpiece feels like a warm hug for your ears—raw, real, and unapologetically human. With Dale Warren on arrangements and Clinton Moon and Sam Dees in the producer’s chair, it’s got just the right mix of grit and polish. Let’s talk about “Mine Was Real” first—it’s the kind of track that grabs you by the heartstrings. Written by Lillian Dees, this song drips with emotion. The vocals? Pure fire. Rozetta belts out every word as if she’s lived every second of it, and honestly, I think she probably did. It’s not flashy or overproduced; instead, it’s honest, almost like a late-night conversation with someone who knows exactly how you feel. You don’t forget songs like this—they stick around because they remind you of your own stories. Then there’s “A Woman’s Way,” which flips the vibe slightly but still keeps that deep soul connection intact. This one feels more reflective, like Rozetta’s telling us her secrets about love, strength, and resilience without saying too much. The groove is smooth enough to carry you away, but it’s her voice—rich and steady—that makes you hit repeat. It’s empowering in a quiet way, something we could all use more of these days. What stands out most about this album isn’t just the music itself—it’s the authenticity. These aren’t cookie-cutter tunes meant to climb charts (though they should have). They’re personal, crafted with care, and delivered straight from the soul. And while the credits list some big names behind the scenes, none of it overshadows Rozetta’s power as an artist. Here’s the thing: listening to this record feels like finding a handwritten letter tucked inside an old book. It’s intimate, nostalgic, and somehow timeless—all at once. If you’re into soul music that doesn’t try too hard to impress but ends up blowing you away anyway, do yourself a favor and give this one a spin. Unexpectedly, though, what really hit me was realizing how rare albums like this are today. We live in an age where everything is loud, fast, and shiny, but back then, artists like Rozetta Johnson weren’t afraid to let their guard down. Maybe that’s why records like A Woman’s Way / Mine Was Real still matter so much—they remind us what true artistry sounds like. Final thought? This album deserves way more attention than it gets. Go find it—you won’t regret it.

Down with the patriarchy. This song is horrible. What a way to teach a woman to put up with bull.

Rosetta Johnson was "bad to the bone". Awesome voice. I sang and played in a local band (USA, UNITED SOUL ASSOCIATION) with her son Joey, a talented singer and trombonist. The 70's were the best!
