Ruth Price Sings With Johnny Smith – A Jazz Gem That Kicks Ass (2002) Alright, let’s get straight to it. This album? It’s fire. Straight-up jazz heat from Ruth Price and Johnny Smith, released in 2002 but with vibes so retro you’ll think your turntable’s stuck in a time warp. Remastered by Malcolm Addey, this sucker sounds crisp—like biting into an apple that’s been chilling in the fridge for hours. Labels like Roost and Fresh Sound Records gave it legs, pushing it out in Japan and Spain. And lemme tell ya, if you’re not spinning this on repeat, you’re doing life wrong. Now, the tracklist is stacked—standards that hit hard, remixed and reimagined with Ruth’s smoky voice and Johnny’s smooth-as-hell guitar work. But two tracks really stuck their landing for me: "This Heart Of Mine" and "When You Wish Upon A Star." "This Heart Of Mine" slaps. Like, hard. Ruth doesn’t just sing; she owns every damn word. Her voice cracks open emotion like a sledgehammer through glass. You feel the ache, the longing, the rawness—it’s messy, beautiful, and real. Meanwhile, Johnny lays down these understated licks that sneak up on you. By the second verse, you’re hooked, man. No escape. And then there’s "When You Wish Upon A Star." Yeah, yeah, you’ve heard it before—but not like this. This version strips everything back until all that’s left is Ruth’s haunting delivery and Johnny’s delicate strings. It’s slow-burn magic, baby. Like watching a sunset while nursing a whiskey sour—you don’t wanna rush it. The way they stretch out those notes makes you realize how much soul can fit into three minutes of music. Damn near spiritual. Look, I ain’t gonna sugarcoat it: this album ain’t for everyone. If you’re out here chasing TikTok trends or bass drops that rattle your skull, keep walking. But if you dig jazz that hits deep, where every note feels earned and every lyric punches you right in the gut, this one’s worth its weight in vinyl. Here’s the kicker though: listening to this record made me wonder why more people aren’t talking about Ruth Price. Seriously, her voice could cut steel, yet she flies under the radar. Maybe that’s okay. Maybe some things are better left untouched, like finding a dusty old book in a library corner that no one else bothers to pick up. Either way, give this album a spin. Just don’t blame me when it ruins other music for you.

About Ruth Price

Ruth Price (born April 27, 1938) is an American jazz singer. A talented singer whose wide expressive qualities do justice to any lyrics that she chooses to interpret, Ruth Price has made relatively few recordings throughout her career. Originally a dancer, she attended ballet school in 1952. However, by 1954 she was singing with Charlie Ventura and, after freelancing in Philadelphia, she worked as a singer and dancer in New York. Price moved to Hollywood in 1957, recorded a fine album with Shelly Manne (which has been reissued in the Original Jazz Classics series), but did not cut her second album as a leader until 1983 (for ITI). She toured with Harry James (1964-1965), but in the '90s became best known for running one of Los Angeles' top jazz clubs, the Jazz Bakery.

great! Ruth Price was great at phrasing and had a unique sound I tend to associate with Bev Kelly and others of that era.
