Diverted Units by Maria W Horn: A Sonic Trip Worth Taking Maria W Horn’s Diverted Units is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. Released back in 2016 under the Holodisc label, this UK-based electronic gem doesn’t try to win you over with catchy hooks or predictable beats. Nope. Instead, it dives deep into drone, abstract, and experimental sounds, crafting something that feels more like an experience than just music. And honestly? That’s what makes it stick. The album kicks off with "Unit IV," and wow, does it set the tone. It’s not exactly easy listening—more like a slow-burning puzzle you wanna solve. The layers of sound feel like they’re stretching out forever, pulling you deeper into this weird, meditative headspace. There’s no big drop or climactic moment—it’s all about the build-up and tension. I remember putting this track on late at night and zoning out completely. Like, I forgot where I was for a sec. Wild stuff. Then there’s "Unit XXX." Man, this one hits different. It’s glitchy, raw, and kinda unsettling in the best way possible. If "Unit IV" is a calm drift through space, "Unit XXX" feels like your spaceship just hit turbulence. It’s chaotic but controlled, if that makes sense? The textures here are jagged and unpredictable, but somehow they still fit together. I kept rewinding parts of it because my brain couldn’t process what I was hearing—and I mean that as a compliment. One thing I dig about Diverted Units is how unapologetically itself it is. Maria W Horn isn’t trying to please anyone; she’s making art on her own terms. Tracks like "Unit II" and "Unit V" keep things interesting too, though they didn’t grab me as hard as the ones I mentioned earlier. Still, the whole album flows really well, even when it’s challenging to listen to. Reflecting on this record got me thinking—what even qualifies as “music” anymore? Is it just noise arranged in a certain way? Or is it about how it makes you feel? Either way, Diverted Units pushes boundaries without being pretentious about it. Honestly, I think Maria W Horn would be cool with you hating it as long as you gave it a proper shot. Oh, and random thought: listening to this album feels like staring at one of those abstract paintings where everyone sees something different. You might hate it, love it, or walk away confused—but you won’t forget it anytime soon.
