Sex Clark Five - Strum Drum

Strum Drum by Sex Clark Five: A Wild Ride Through Pop-Rock Chaos Let’s cut the crap—Strum Drum is one of those albums that punches you in the face and then makes you thank it later. Released way back in '87, this gem from Sex Clark Five straddles genres like a drunk cowboy on a horse. It’s part Rock & Roll, part Pop Rock, with just enough Indie Rock sprinkled in to keep things weird. And trust me, weird works here. First off, let’s talk about “Get Back Yoko.” Holy hell, this track hits hard. With James Butler shredding his electric guitar like he’s trying to start a fire, and Trick McKaha pounding the drums like they owe him money, it’s an opening salvo that doesn’t mess around. The vocals? Rick Storey sounds pissed but smooth, like your favorite bartender after a bad day. This isn’t some polished pop anthem—it’s raw, gritty, and dripping with attitude. You don’t listen to “Get Back Yoko,” you feel it. Then there’s “Jeepster,” which flips the script entirely. Where “Yoko” kicks down doors, “Jeepster” sneaks through the window. Joy Johnson’s bassline slinks along like a cat up to no good, while Rick Storey croons like he knows something you don’t. There’s this moment halfway through where everything drops out except for the acoustic guitar—it’s haunting as hell, man. Feels like walking into a ghost town at sunset. By the time the full band crashes back in, you’re hooked. No choice. But let’s not kid ourselves—this album ain’t perfect. Some tracks feel like filler (looking at you, “Modern Fix”), and the production has that lo-fi charm that either grabs you or drives you nuts. But honestly? That’s what makes Strum Drum so damn endearing. It’s messy, unpredictable, and unapologetically itself. What sticks with me most isn’t just the music—it’s how alive it feels. Like these guys weren’t worried about trends or pleasing anyone; they just wanted to make noise their way. And damn if it doesn’t work. Listening to this record feels like finding a dusty old VHS tape in your attic and realizing it’s gold. So yeah, give Strum Drum a spin if you dig stuff that bites back. Just don’t expect anything safe. Hell, I’ll leave you with this: If John Lennon ever decided to write rock songs about alien abductions, it might sound something like this. Fucked up? Sure. But also kinda genius.

Interesting fact about Album

Here's something cool: The album *Strum Drum* by Sex Clark Five is like a time capsule from 1987, blending genres like Pop, Rock, and Indie Rock. It’s got this raw Rock & Roll energy with tracks such as "Get Back Yoko" and "Jeepster." What’s wild is how hands-on the band was—Rick Storey didn’t just play acoustic guitar and sing; he also designed the artwork. And check this out—James Butler wrote most of the songs but somehow left gaps in the tracklist (like 24, 30, and 32 missing). It’s quirky details like that which make *Strum Drum* feel so unique. Plus, it saw releases in both the US and UK on small indie labels, giving it this underground charm.

In addition, I'm a professor of History and one-quarter Serb, so the lyrics really strike home.

I was a DJ at WTUL, 91.5FM from 1985-1990. I played this song, and their whole album on a regular basis. Simply great music.
