Album Review: Simone’s Liberdade – A Soulful Journey Through Brazilian Roots Simone’s Liberdade, released in 1990 on the CBS label, is one of those albums that feels like a warm hug from Brazil itself. With its mix of Latin, Folk, World, and Country vibes, it dives deep into Brazilian traditions, Afro-Brazilian rhythms, and MPB (Música Popular Brasileira). It’s not just an album—it’s a vibe, man. Like sipping cafézinho while watching the sunset over Rio de Janeiro. The tracklist? Oh boy. You’ve got gems like “Codinome Beija-Flor,” which hits you with this sultry, almost hypnotic groove. The way Simone sings—her voice smooth as melted butter yet sharp enough to cut glass—is unforgettable. This song sticks with me because it’s got layers, ya know? It’s poetic but also kinda sneaky, like a secret whispered in your ear. Every time I hear it, I picture myself wandering through cobblestone streets, lost in thought but totally okay with it. Then there’s “O Sal Da Terra.” Man, this one punches you right in the feels. It’s slow, deliberate, and packed with emotion. The lyrics feel like they’re speaking directly to your soul, reminding you of life’s beauty and struggles. There’s something raw about how Simone delivers each word—it’s like she’s lived every line. When the chorus kicks in, goosebumps are guaranteed. Honestly, if this song doesn’t make you wanna stare out a window and reflect on existence, check your pulse. What’s wild about Liberdade is how cohesive it feels despite having so many tracks (seriously, there are repeats like “Liberdade Liberdade” showing up twice, but hey, maybe it’s intentional?). The repetition kinda works though—it’s like revisiting a favorite spot during a road trip. And let’s not forget bangers like “Amor E Paixão” or “Esquinas,” where Simone flexes her ability to blend passion with melody seamlessly. But here’s the thing: listening to Liberdade isn’t just about enjoying music—it’s about connecting with Brazil’s heartbeat. Simone channels everything—the joy, the pain, the hope—and wraps it all up in these lush arrangements. It’s messy in the best way possible, like life itself. So yeah, if you’re looking for background tunes to play at your next chill hangout session, skip this. But if you want an album that makes you stop what you’re doing and really listen, then Liberdade is your jam. Just don’t blame me when you find yourself humming “O Sal Da Terra” for days. Oh, and fun fact: did you know bees can recognize faces? Weird, huh? Kinda like how this album will stick in your mind long after it ends.
