Review by JUNI DERITA SM Pasaribu

Skeleton Coast’s self-titled debut album Skeleton Coast isn’t just another record—it’s a mood. Released in 2012, this shoegaze-meets-rock gem from the USA and Canada feels like staring out at an endless horizon of crashing waves and gray skies. It’s raw, unpolished, and kinda beautiful in its messiness. The band didn’t even bother with a flashy label; it’s “Not On Label,” which somehow fits perfectly. Like, who needs big-name backing when your sound already screams rebellion? Now, let me get into two tracks that stuck with me because they just hit different. First up is "Forget." Man, this one’s haunting. From the opening notes, it drags you under like quicksand—you’re sinking, but weirdly okay with it. The guitars swirl around so thick you can almost feel them pressing against your chest, while the vocals sit back like a ghost whispering secrets you’ll never fully understand. I remember listening to this late at night, headphones on, thinking about all the stuff I wish I could forget myself. By the end, I wasn’t sure if I felt better or worse—but damn, did it feel real. Then there’s "Greenhouse." This track’s got this slow-burn intensity that sneaks up on you. At first, it feels lazy, like sunlight pooling through dirty windows. But then the distortion kicks in, heavy as regret, and suddenly you’re drowning again (yeah, drowning seems to be a theme here). What makes "Greenhouse" stick for me is how it builds—not too fast, not too slow—just enough to keep you hooked until the last note fades away. It’s the kind of song that makes you want to drive nowhere in particular, windows down, letting the wind mess up everything. The rest of the album keeps the vibe going strong—"Young," "Sludge," even the mysteriously named "Untitled"—each track has its own little piece of chaos wrapped up in layers of reverb. Honestly, it’s hard not to get lost in it all. But here’s the thing: after listening to Skeleton Coast, I couldn’t help but laugh a little. These guys made something so deliberately messy yet totally magnetic—it’s like they took all their broken pieces and glued them together with grit and feedback. And somehow, it works. Maybe life’s more like shoegaze than we realize: loud, hazy, and impossible to pin down. Who knew noise could feel so human?

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *Skeleton Coast* by the band Skeleton Coast is a hidden gem in the shoegaze rock scene. Released in 2012, it’s a raw and moody project that feels like getting lost in a foggy dream. What’s wild is that it was released independently under "Not On Label," meaning the band didn’t rely on a big-name label to share their music.
