Album Review: The Revolution Kind by Sonny Sonny's Group Released in 1965, The Revolution Kind is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. It’s not perfect, but it’s got this raw charm that sticks around long after the needle lifts off the record. With its blend of pop and rock—what we now call Pop Rock—it feels like a snapshot of its time, capturing both the optimism and restlessness of mid-60s America and Britain. Backed by ATCO Records and Atlantic, this project was clearly meant to make waves, even if history hasn’t given it the spotlight it deserves. Sonny Bono wears multiple hats here—he wrote all the tracks, produced side A, and arranged those same tunes. You can hear his fingerprints all over the album, for better or worse. His style isn’t groundbreaking, but there’s something earnest about it, like he’s pouring everything he has into these songs. Two tracks stand out as reasons why I keep coming back: “Georgia And John Quetzal” and the title track, “The Revolution Kind.” “Georgia And John Quetzal” grabs your attention right away with its quirky storytelling vibe. The lyrics paint a vivid picture—you’re not just listening; you’re watching some surreal movie unfold. There’s Georgia, bold and mysterious, and then there’s John Quetzal, who sounds more like a mythical figure than a guy you’d meet at a bar. The melody has this playful bounce to it, almost teasing you into guessing what happens next. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever heard another song quite like it. It’s weird enough to be memorable but catchy enough to stick in your head for days. Then there’s “The Revolution Kind,” which feels like the emotional core of the album. If “Georgia” is playful, this one’s serious business. It starts slow, almost hesitant, before building into this anthemic swell that makes you wanna pump your fist. Lyrically, it’s vague enough to let listeners fill in the blanks—what kind of revolution are we talking about? Love? Politics? Personal change? Whatever it is, Bono sells it hard, and the arrangement gives it weight without tipping into melodrama. One thing worth noting is how polished yet unpolished this record feels. On one hand, you’ve got tight production values, courtesy of Bono himself. On the other, there’s an unmistakable DIY energy running through the tracks. Maybe that’s why it resonates—it doesn’t feel manufactured, even though it technically is. Looking back, The Revolution Kind might not have changed the world, but it did carve out a little corner for itself in the vast landscape of 60s music. Listening to it today feels like finding an old photograph tucked inside a book—you recognize the era instantly, but there’s also something timeless about the emotions captured within. And hey, isn’t that what good music’s supposed to do? Make you feel something, whether it’s nostalgia, curiosity, or just plain joy? Funny enough, the only thing missing from this album is a warning label: “Caution: May Cause Random Humming Fits.”

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *The Revolution Kind* by Sonny Bono’s group came out in 1965 and blends pop and rock in a way that feels timeless. What’s wild is that Sonny Bono didn’t just sing on it—he also wrote, arranged, and produced the tracks on side A. One of the standout songs, "Georgia And John Quetzal," has this quirky charm that mixes storytelling with groovy pop-rock vibes. It’s like a little snapshot of mid-60s creativity, released under ATCO and Atlantic Records in both the US and UK. Not bad for someone who’d later become famous as half of Sonny & Cher!

No, I'm sorry but I can hear why Sonny did not have or make much of a singing career. Thank the gods though that he got Cher started on hers. Today I cannot understand what I may have seen in sonny, maybe I didn't see anything, maybe it was ALL just Cher.
