Spraydog - Lintered

Review by Jim Liston

Lintered by Spraydog: A Britpop Gem That Still Shines (Kinda) Let’s get one thing straight—Spraydog’s Lintered isn’t perfect. But hey, who is? Released in 2000 via Ferric Mordant Records, this UK indie rock oddity feels like a mixtape your cooler older sibling made when they were trying to impress their art school crush. It blends rock and pop with just enough indie quirkiness to keep things interesting but not so much that you need a PhD in obscure guitar pedals to appreciate it. The album kicks off with “Beware The Sun,” which hits you like a double espresso on an empty stomach—jittery, intense, and kinda unforgettable. The bassline groans like James (yes, that James—the guy doing double duty on vocals and bass) forgot his meds, while Chris’s drumming keeps everything from spiraling into chaos. By the time Phil’s guitar solo kicks in, you’re either nodding along or wondering if someone slipped something into your drink. Either way, it’s memorable. Then there’s “Cupid On A Dolphin Mosaic,” because obviously, right? Who wouldn’t want cupid riding a dolphin through a mosaic? This track leans more toward the pop side of things, with hooks sharp enough to snag your socks. James sounds less angsty here, crooning about... well, honestly, I have no clue what he’s singing about. Something poetic involving love and dolphins, probably. But damn if those harmonies don’t stick to your brain like gum under a desk. Props go out to Chips Macallister and Steven for mixing this beast—it’s polished without losing its scrappy charm. And can we talk about Se Hall’s artwork for a sec? If the music doesn’t grab you, the cover will. Helen Pearson’s photography adds another layer of artsy cred, making sure the whole package screams “indie darling.” Of course, not every track lands perfectly. Songs like “Box” and “Dialling Mit” feel like filler tracks at a house party where everyone's waiting for the pizza to arrive. But hey, even great albums have their awkward moments. Looking back, Lintered feels like a snapshot of its time—a little rough around the edges, dripping with ambition, and unapologetically British. In a world now overrun with algorithmic playlists and TikTok hits, it’s refreshing to revisit something as gloriously imperfect as this. Final thought: If Spraydog ever decided to reunite, I’d totally buy tickets—but only if they promised to play “Cupid On A Dolphin Mosaic” twice. Because once just wouldn’t be enough. Rating: 7.8/10 – Not life-changing, but definitely playlist-worthy.
