Stonecake - Sunnier

Review by Jacques Joseph Akana Iumola

Sunnier by Stonecake: A Forgotten Gem from 1993 That Still Shines Let’s get one thing straight—Sweden in the '90s wasn’t just about ABBA reruns and IKEA meatballs. Nope, it was also home to some killer tunes, like Sunnier by Stonecake. Released under MVG Records back in ’93, this album is a wild ride through Pop Rock, Soft Rock, and even Hard Rock vibes. Produced by Jacob Hellner (yep, the same guy who worked with Rammstein), it’s got layers you don’t expect from your average pop-rock record. First off, can we talk about that cover art? Designed by Thomas F.S.E., it screams mid-'90s cool without trying too hard. It’s not flashy or overdone—just simple enough to make you curious. And trust me, once you dive into the tracks, curiosity turns into full-blown obsession. Now, onto the songs. The title track “Sunnier” comes in three versions: Fläsk Mix, Single Edit, and Album Version. Don’t ask me what “Fläsk” means—I’m guessing something Swedish and slightly badass—but damn, does it slap. Out of all the mixes, I keep coming back to the Album Version. There’s an energy there that feels raw yet polished, like they knew exactly when to let loose and when to hold back. You’ll find yourself humming along before you realize you’ve listened to it five times in a row. Then there’s “Gunnar.” Who names a song Gunnar? Stonecake does, apparently. This track hits different—it’s punchy, guitar-driven, and kinda reminds you of those summer nights where everything feels possible. Maybe it’s the way the drums kick in or how the vocals have this unapologetic edge. Whatever it is, it sticks. Like peanut butter on the roof of your mouth kind of sticking. The mastering credit goes to BA (whoever you are, thank you). Every beat and riff sounds crisp, even by today’s standards. Hats off to Stonecake for arranging their own stuff—they clearly knew what they were doing. Looking back, Sunnier feels ahead of its time but also perfectly ‘90s. It’s nostalgic yet fresh, like finding an old mixtape in your car and realizing it still rocks. Weirdly enough, listening to this album made me wonder if Gunnar was a real person or just a random name they threw out there. Either way, he should be proud. So yeah, if you’re into albums that blend genres seamlessly while keeping things real, give Sunnier a spin. Just don’t blame me if you end up naming your next dog Gunnar.

One of the best rock songs ever, produced on a cloudy day? The end and crescendo (from about 3:25 forwards) enhances the impression intended to be made, to be written right now, for nobody to be seen but everyone, happening to have the "golden ticket" to having a Google connection.
