Review by Jamie Halvorson

9012Live The Solos Expanded by Yes: A Rock Odyssey Worth Revisiting Alright, let’s cut to the chase—Yes’ 9012Live The Solos Expanded isn’t your run-of-the-mill live album. Released in 2011 under Friday Music, this gem dives deep into the band's iconic sound with a mix of Classic Rock, Prog Rock, and even some Stage & Screen vibes for good measure. It’s like they took everything you love about Yes and gave it an extra shot of espresso. Now, if you’re familiar with Yes (and c’mon, who isn’t?), you know these guys are no strangers to pushing boundaries. This expanded edition throws in solo performances from key members like Chris Squire, Jon Anderson, Trevor Rabin, and Tony Kaye. And trust me, hearing them flex their individual muscles is both nostalgic and kinda mind-blowing. Let’s talk tracks because, honestly, that’s where the magic happens. First up, we’ve got “Amazing Graze”, which is basically Chris Squire saying, “Hey world, I can shred on bass AND make it sound melodic.” Spoiler alert: He nails it. There’s something hypnotic about how his fingers dance across the strings—it’s like watching someone solve a Rubik’s Cube while breakdancing. You don’t fully understand what’s happening, but dang, do you appreciate it. Then there’s “Soon (Jon Anderson Solo)”, which hits different. If you’re not tearing up halfway through, check your pulse—you might be part robot. Jon’s voice soars like he’s serenading the cosmos itself, and the stripped-down arrangement lets every note breathe. It’s one of those songs that reminds you why Yes became legends in the first place. Plus, it’s proof that sometimes less really is more. Of course, the rest of the album delivers too. Tracks like “City of Love” and “Hold On” bring back memories of arena shows where everyone was just vibing together, swaying under neon lights. Meanwhile, quirky solos like Tony Kaye’s “Si” add flavor without overstaying their welcome. Kudos to Paul Massey and Bill Ludwig for making sure the audio quality feels crisp enough to rival modern releases. But here’s the kicker—this isn’t just nostalgia bait. Listening to 9012Live The Solos Expanded feels like catching up with an old friend who still has plenty of stories left to tell. Sure, the occasional dated synth patch might raise an eyebrow, but hey, imperfections give character, right? In conclusion, this album doesn’t just revisit Yes’ glory days; it adds layers to them. Whether you’re a diehard prog-head or just someone looking to dive into classic rock history, this record’s got something for ya. Just don’t blame me when you find yourself humming “Amazing Graze” at random moments throughout your day. And finally… ever notice how Yes always seems to leave us wanting more? Maybe that’s the secret to their longevity. Or maybe they just enjoy messing with our heads. Either way, works for me.
