Album Review: Taakeferd’s Når Sirkelen Brytes – A Blackened Journey Worth Taking Alright, let’s talk about Når Sirkelen Brytes by Taakeferd. Released in 2012 under the German label Obscure Abhorrence Productions, this black metal beast doesn’t mess around. It’s raw, intense, and unapologetically grim—exactly what you’d expect from a band that bleeds darkness into every track. And hey, when you’ve got a dude like Svulst Augustus handling vocals, lyrics, AND illustrations (seriously, props to multitaskers), you know it’s gonna be personal. The album clocks in with some killer tracks, but two really stuck with me: “Sort Himmel Evangelium” and “Tanken Temmer Voldens Makt.” Let’s break ‘em down. First up, “Sort Himmel Evangelium.” Man, this one hits hard. The riffs are sharp enough to cut glass, courtesy of Forsite Plaguewielder and Kvide on guitars. But what makes it unforgettable is how the song builds tension. You start off feeling kinda uneasy, like something bad’s lurking just outta sight. Then BAM! The blast beats kick in—shoutout to Mar-Sacrare on drums—and suddenly you’re neck-deep in chaos. Svulst’s vocals are straight-up haunting here, almost like he’s whispering secrets meant for no one but himself. By the time it ends, you’re left breathless, wondering if your soul just got a little darker. Then there’s “Tanken Temmer Voldens Makt,” which feels like a twisted anthem for anyone who’s ever felt rage bubbling inside them. This track has these eerie melodic bits that sneak through the aggression, giving it an almost hypnotic vibe. Like, you wanna bang your head, sure, but you also find yourself zoning out, lost in the layers of sound. The lyrics hit deep too—Svulst knows how to write stuff that sticks with you long after the music stops. Plus, the mix by Taakeferd themselves keeps everything tight without losing that lo-fi charm black metal fans crave. One thing I gotta mention—the production. Yeah, it’s not perfect, but honestly? That works for this album. Mastered by Ariel Velferdspenis Joshua (best name ever, btw), it’s gritty and raw, letting the music do all the talking. Same goes for Johan E. Arntzen’s layout design and Gøran Stensrud’s photography; they add to the whole mysterious aesthetic without overdoing it. Now, here’s the kicker. Listening to Når Sirkelen Brytes feels less like entertainment and more like stepping into someone else’s nightmare—or maybe their salvation. Either way, it’s heavy as hell, both musically and emotionally. Oh, and fun fact: Did anyone else notice the repeated tracks listed at the end? Feels like a glitch, but knowing black metal, it might actually be intentional. Makes ya think, right? So yeah, if you’re into black metal that punches you in the gut while whispering existential dread into your ear, check out Når Sirkelen Brytes. Just don’t blame me if you wake up questioning your life choices afterward.
