Review by Aghnia Fasza

Bixology Riverboat Shuffle: A Timeless Jazz Gem That Still Swings Man, if you’re a fan of that raw, unfiltered jazz sound, Bixology Riverboat Shuffle by Bix Beiderbecke and The Wolverine Orchestra is the kind of album that’ll slap you right in the feels. Released way back in 1973 (yeah, I know, it’s wild this came out in Italy), it’s got that Dixieland vibe that makes you wanna grab a partner and dance like nobody’s watching—or maybe just sit back with a drink and let the music wash over you. Let me tell ya, this record is packed with tracks that feel alive, like they were recorded in the moment, no second takes. One standout for me has gotta be "Riverboat Shuffle." It’s one of those tunes where Bix’s cornet just leaps outta the speakers, smooth but sharp at the same time. You can almost picture him standing there, fingers flying over the keys, totally lost in the groove. And then there’s the rhythm section—Vic Moore on drums and Min Leibrook on tuba keeping things tight. Honestly, this track feels like summer nights on a paddle steamer, even if you’ve never been near a riverboat in your life. Another banger? Oh, man, "Tiger Rag" hits hard. This one’s got teeth, alright. The whole band goes off, especially Jimmy Hartwell on clarinet and George Johnson on tenor sax. They’re trading licks like it’s a game of hot potato, and somehow it all works. There’s this point near the end where everything drops out except for Bix’s solo, and dude… it’s like he’s telling you a story without saying a word. Goosebumps every single time. What’s wild about this album is how real it feels. Like, yeah, it’s jazz—but it’s not shiny or polished. You can hear the creaks, the tiny mistakes, the living, breathing energy of musicians who just get each other. Bob Gillette’s banjo strumming ties it all together, and Dick Voynow’s piano? Pure magic. Even the design by Sergio Balloni has this retro charm that fits the vibe perfectly. Now here’s the kicker—this album wasn’t even made in America, where you’d expect something this authentic to come from. Nope, it dropped in Italy under the Joker label. How crazy is that? Feels like finding a rare coin in your couch cushions. So yeah, if you’re looking for music that doesn’t try too hard but still knocks your socks off, give Bixology Riverboat Shuffle a spin. Just don’t blame me when you catch yourself humming “Riverboat Shuffle” while brushing your teeth. Trust me, it happens. P.S. Fun fact: Nobody knows who played trumpet on tracks A3 to B7. Kinda adds to the mystery, doesn’t it?

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *Bixology Riverboat Shuffle* by Bix Beiderbecke Featuring The Wolverine Orchestra is a jazz treasure that came out in 1973, even though the recordings are much older. It’s wild to think this Dixieland masterpiece was released in Italy on the Joker label. One standout detail? Bix Beiderbecke, the legendary cornet player, shines as both a bandleader and soloist. Oh, and get this—there’s a mystery trumpet player credited as “Unknown Artist” on several tracks. That just adds to the charm, doesn’t it?
