Jay Pace - Shenzhen EP

Review by Ignacio Manuel García Medina

Shenzhen EP by Jay Pace: A Minimal Techno Gem That Still Hits Different Let’s get one thing straight—Jay Pace’s Shenzhen EP isn’t just another electronic release from 2008. It’s the kind of record that sneaks up on you when you least expect it, like a quiet stranger at a party who ends up being the most fascinating person in the room. Released via Tyrisia Records out of the UK, this four-track EP blends minimal and techno with an understated confidence that feels both raw and refined. Now, I’ll be honest—I’m not someone who throws around superlatives for every synth line or kick drum. But there are moments here that stick to your brain like gum under a table. Two tracks in particular have burrowed their way into my head: “Exit Clonbrock” and “Shenzhen.” “Exit Clonbrock” is… weirdly hypnotic. Like, you don’t even realize how deep you’re into it until five minutes have passed and suddenly you’re staring blankly at your wall wondering what year it is. The track builds so subtly, layering these tiny, almost imperceptible details that make you feel like you're unlocking some sort of secret code. It's moody but never overbearing, kinda like walking through an empty city late at night. You know those nights where everything feels bigger than you? Yeah, that vibe. And then there’s “Shenzhen,” which shares its name with the EP. This one hits different because it’s got this pulsing rhythm that feels alive—it breathes, man. There’s something about the way the bassline locks in with the hi-hats; it’s mechanical yet human, like hearing a heartbeat inside a machine. It doesn’t scream for attention—it earns it. By the time the track fades out, you’re left wanting more, which is exactly how good music should leave you feeling. The other two tracks, “Torin” and “Out Comes Stanley,” aren’t slouches either. They hold the whole thing together, adding texture and depth without stealing the spotlight. Honestly, though, if you only listen to “Exit Clonbrock” and “Shenzhen,” you’ve already tapped into the soul of this EP. What gets me thinking after listening to this is how timeless it feels. Sure, it came out in 2008, but it could easily pass for something released today. Maybe that’s the magic of minimal techno—it strips things down to their essence, focusing on mood and movement rather than flashy trends. Or maybe Jay Pace just knew what he was doing all along. Anyway, here’s the kicker: while writing this review, I realized I’ve been spelling "Clonbrock" wrong half the time. Is it Clonebrook? Clonbroke? Who cares, really. What matters is how the music makes you feel—and trust me, Shenzhen EP does that in spades.
