Album Review: Dominic Miller’s Absinthe – A Contemporary Jazz Gem Alright, let’s talk about Dominic Miller’s Absinthe. Released in 2019 under the legendary ECM Records (and a few other labels across Germany, Russia, and Japan), this album is like a quiet Sunday morning that somehow feels both nostalgic and brand new. It’s contemporary jazz with a vibe so smooth it could lull you into a daydream, but there’s also this subtle edge that keeps you hooked. The lineup? Solid. You’ve got Manu Katché on drums, Nicolas Fiszman on bass, Mike Lindup tickling the keys, and Santiago Arias adding that haunting bandoneon sound. Oh, and of course, Dominic Miller himself weaving magic with his guitar. Produced by Manfred Eicher, who’s basically the wizard behind ECM’s signature sound, this thing has layers—like an onion, but way less tear-inducing. Now, onto the tracks. There are some real standouts here, but I’ll focus on two that stuck with me for different reasons. First up, “La Petite Reine.” This one just rides this groove that feels like cruising down a country road on a bike—you know, no destination in mind, just enjoying the breeze. The interplay between Miller’s guitar and Katché’s drums is tight, almost conversational. It’s not flashy or overdone; it’s just… right. Like when you stumble upon your favorite coffee shop by accident. You don’t question it—you just enjoy it. Then there’s “Ténèbres,” which hits different. Darker, moodier, like staring at shadows moving across your wall late at night. The bandoneon really takes center stage here, giving it this tango-like melancholy. It’s the kind of track that makes you pause whatever you’re doing and just listen. Not sure why, but it reminded me of old black-and-white films where people smoke cigarettes dramatically while staring out rainy windows. Yeah, it’s that cinematic. One thing I love about Absinthe is how understated yet intentional everything feels. Even the cover art—shot by Fotini Potamia—is simple but striking, kinda like the music itself. And props to Christoph Bombart for those liner photos; they add this extra layer of personality to the whole package. Honestly, listening to this album feels like hanging out with someone who doesn’t need to try too hard to impress you. They just are, and that’s enough. In a world full of noise, Absinthe gives you space to breathe. Oh, random thought: absinthe is nicknamed “the green fairy,” right? Well, if this album were a drink, it’d be one of those cocktails you sip slowly because you don’t wanna rush the experience. Cheers to that.

Dominic Miller preserves the glowing passion of argentine tango while playing thoughtfully structured. His rhythmic precision, his tasteful harmonic voicings and the playful drums by Manu Katche make this album even more valuable. Like a straight-forward version of Ralph Towner with argentine roots and rock/pop based foundation. Very enjoyable.

Beautiful! Such a wonderful group of musicians (I've been fortunate enough to see most of this line-up in different bands). I'm sooo late to this particular collection, but now I'm here, going to take time to appreciate the music. Many thanks.
