Rolar - Briken Robot EP

Review by Andrew Conard

Alright, let's dive into Broken Robot EP by Rolar. Released back in 2011 on Overtech Recordings, this little gem from the UK is a solid entry in the drum n bass scene. It’s one of those albums that doesn’t try too hard to impress but still hits you right where it counts. First off, the title track “Broken Robot” is just… chef’s kiss. It kicks off with this gritty, distorted bassline that feels like your speakers are falling apart (in a good way). There’s something about how the beat builds up and then drops out completely before slamming back in—it’s pure energy. You can tell Rolar wasn’t messing around when they made this. Every time I hear it, I get flashbacks to late-night drives through empty streets, windows down, volume up. Feels like the soundtrack to some dystopian sci-fi flick, ya know? Then there’s “White Energon,” which is kinda wild in its own way. The synths here feel almost alien-like, shimmering and glitchy, like they’re trying to communicate with us or something. It’s got this weirdly hypnotic vibe that pulls you in without even realizing it. Honestly, it reminds me of staring at static on an old TV screen—yeah, I’m dating myself here—but somehow it works. It’s not as in-your-face as “Broken Robot,” but it sticks with you all the same. The other two tracks, “Biomechatronics” and “Cybertron,” round things out nicely. They keep the futuristic theme going strong, full of mechanical grooves and sharp breaks. But if I’m being honest, these two didn’t quite stick in my brain the way the first couple did. Still solid though—no skips! What’s cool about this EP is how cohesive it feels despite only having four tracks. It’s short, yeah, but every song adds something unique to the vibe. And honestly? That might be why it stands out. In a world where everyone’s throwing 15-track albums at us, sometimes less really is more. Random thought: listening to this makes me wonder what Rolar would sound like today. Like, imagine them dropping a new album with modern production tools while keeping that raw edge. Would it blow minds or fall flat? Either way, Broken Robot EP holds up pretty damn well for something over a decade old. Mad respect. Now go listen to it—but maybe don’t blame me if your neighbors start complaining!
