Animal Bag - Image Damage

Review by Caitlin Kelly

Image Damage by Animal Bag: A Psychedelic Trip Through Time Alright, let’s talk about Image Damage by Animal Bag. This 1969 gem is like that weird uncle who shows up uninvited but ends up being the life of the party. It’s got everything—Heavy Metal grit, Hard Rock swagger, Alternative Pop vibes, and even some Psychedelic Rock to mess with your brain. Released on Mercury (yep, the same label that gave us Queen), this album feels like a time capsule from an era when rock music was still figuring itself out—and having way too much fun doing it. First off, can we appreciate the lineup? You’ve got Rich Parris shredding lead guitar AND singing his heart out, Luke Edwards pulling double duty on vocals and guitar, Otis Hughes laying down basslines so groovy they could make a statue dance, and Boo Duckworth smashing drums and percussion like he’s trying to wake the dead. Oh, and let’s not forget Terry Date producing this madness—he clearly knew how to wrangle chaos into something listenable. Hats off to engineer Ulrich Wild too; dude must’ve had nerves of steel recording all this sonic insanity. Now, onto the tracks. There are standouts here that stick in your head like gum under a desk. Take “Death of My Youth,” for example. Man, this one hits hard. The opening riff sounds like someone took a chainsaw and tuned it to E minor—it’s heavy, man. Then Luke Edwards comes in with those haunting lyrics about growing up too fast and losing yourself along the way. By the time the chorus kicks in, you’re ready to punch a wall or hug a stranger—it’s that emotional. And don’t get me started on the solo. Rich Parris just goes OFF, like he’s channeling every teenage angst-fueled dream he ever had into six strings. It’s raw, it’s real, and honestly? It’s kinda beautiful. Then there’s “Spirit of Grass.” If “Death of My Youth” is the angsty teenager, this track is the chill hippie cousin chilling in the corner smoking… well, grass. It’s trippy as hell, with layers of swirling guitars and vocals that sound like they’re coming from another dimension. Listening to it feels like floating downstream while staring at clouds shaped like dinosaurs. At one point, I swear I heard what sounded like actual birds chirping in the background—either that or I was losing my mind. Either way, it works. It’s the kind of song that makes you wanna lie back, close your eyes, and pretend the world doesn’t exist for four minutes. But hey, let’s be real—the whole album isn’t perfect. Some tracks drag a bit, and yeah, maybe they got a little too experimental at times (cough “Mundania” cough). Still, there’s something undeniably cool about how Animal Bag refuses to play it safe. They weren’t chasing hits—they were making art, baby. And sometimes, that art gets messy. But isn’t that the best kind? Here’s the thing: listening to Image Damage feels like stepping into a time machine. Not the sleek, shiny ones from sci-fi movies, though. More like the busted-up DeLorean from Back to the Future, patched together with duct tape and hope. It’s rough around the edges, sure, but damn if it doesn’t take you somewhere unforgettable. And now, for the unexpected remark: I’m pretty sure if Elon Musk ever decides to colonize Mars, he’ll blast this album during liftoff. Because nothing screams “intergalactic rebellion” quite like Animal Bag.

About Animal Bag

Animal Bag was an alternative metal grunge band from Charlotte, North Carolina, United States, which was active from 1987 through 1998. After some personnel changes, the band congealed around members Luke Edwards (vocals and guitar), Rich Parris (guitars and vocals), Otis Hughes (bass guitar), and Boo Duckworth (drums and percussion) in 1987. After building a following in their native North Carolina, the group relocated to Los Angeles in 1989. Favorable press in newspapers including the L.A. Music Scene, which compared them to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Faith No More, coupled with the exploding alternative music scene, brought the band to the attention of several A&R execs, and Animal Bag was eventually signed to Mercury records in 1992. Their 1992 self-titled initial release mixed acoustic and electric rock and Animal Bag was prominently featured in the pilot episode of My So-Called Life as the party band. The album's first single, Everybody, peaked briefly at No. 29 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart in 1993, and was a minor success in Japan, hitting No. 32 for 8 weeks in March 1993. Their follow-up 1994 album Offering was all-acoustic and did not chart well in the U.S. Mercury was willing to give the band one more chance, and brought in producer Terry Date to helm a return to harder-edged music for the band's 1996 album Image Damage. The album was never released because of inner shakeups at the record label; most of the people who had worked the first two Animal Bag releases left the label. By 1998, the band had broken up and singer Luke Edwards went on to form the bluegrass band Tater. On June 5, 2002, drummer Boo Duckworth died from natural causes at age 35. On March 9, 2010, lead guitarist Richard Parris died. According to the medical examiner, cause of death was a ruptured ulcer. Rich had just recorded an album with his band (with Otis from Animal Bag) M4 Messenger.
