Album Review: Musical Movements by Aarhus Girls Choir If you’re into choral music that feels like a warm hug for your soul, then Musical Movements by the Aarhus Girls Choir is worth a listen. Released in 2015 under the German label Hänssler Classic, this album dives deep into classical choral beauty with tracks that range from sacred hymns to playful, almost whimsical tunes. It’s not just another choir album—it’s an experience. One track that really stuck with me is “Singing Sand.” The way the voices blend together gives off this ethereal vibe, like you’re standing on a quiet beach at sunset. You can practically hear the grains of sand shifting beneath your feet. What makes it even cooler is how the harmonies build up slowly, layer by layer, until they explode into this rich tapestry of sound. It’s one of those songs where you close your eyes and suddenly forget where you are. Credit goes to conductor Helle Høyer Vedel for pulling such emotion out of the singers—seriously impressive stuff. Another standout is “How Very Great My Grief.” This one hits different. The lyrics are heavy, but the choir delivers them with so much tenderness that it doesn’t feel overwhelming. There’s something about the balance between sorrow and hope here that gets me every time. Plus, the engineering work by Reinhard Geller deserves a shoutout because the clarity of each voice is insane. Random thought: Listening to this album makes me wonder what it must’ve been like to record it. Imagine being Henrik Winther Hansen (the technician for tracks 1-8) trying to mic all those young voices without losing any magic. Or Nicol Matt, wearing his executive-producer hat, making sure everything came together smoothly. Hats off to the team behind the scenes—they nailed it. So yeah, whether you’re a die-hard fan of choral music or just looking for something calming to play in the background while you work, Musical Movements has got you covered. Just don’t blame me if you end up humming “Singing Sand” for days afterward. Trust me, it happens.

About Aarhus Girls Choir

Aarhus Pigekor (English: Aarhus Girls Choir) is a Danish choir associated with Aarhus Music School (Aarhus Musikskole) and consists of 35 young female singers. The choir dates back to the 1940's, was formerly named , but in 2002 handpicked 25 female singers which became the Aarhus Pigekor. The choir released their first CD in 2008.
