Scum - Gospels For The Sick

Review by Stefan Marshall

Gospels For The Sick: A Chaotic Masterpiece That Still Kicks Ass Released in 2005, Gospels For The Sick by Scum is one of those albums that doesn’t just sit quietly in your collection—it screams, thrashes, and spits in your face. With its unholy blend of punk, black metal, heavy metal, hardcore, and thrash, this record feels like a sonic Molotov cocktail thrown straight at the listener. Born out of collaborations between Germany, Norway, and the US, with labels like Candlelight Records USA and DogJob Records backing it, this album was destined to be loud, raw, and unforgettable. Let’s talk tracks for a sec. First up, “The Perfect Mistake.” This song hits hard from the get-go, blending Casey Chaos’ venomous vocals with razor-sharp riffs courtesy of Cosmocrator and Samoth. What makes this track stick? It’s not just the music; it’s the attitude. The lyrics hit like a punch to the gut, filled with defiance and rebellion. You can almost picture Casey Chaos pacing backstage after writing these lines, muttering something about how "truth won't be sold." And yeah, there’s no selling out here—just pure, unfiltered rage. Then there’s “Night Of 1000 Deaths,” which honestly sounds like an apocalypse caught on tape. Faust’s drumming is relentless, while Happy Tom’s basslines rumble beneath the chaos like distant thunder. This track sticks because it refuses to let you breathe. By the time you hit the halfway mark, you’re either headbanging so hard you’ve got whiplack or questioning every life choice that led you here. Either way, mission accomplished. What really ties this whole thing together is Stephen O’Malley’s artwork and design. If the music wasn’t enough to freak you out, the cover art seals the deal. Paired with Marius Bodin Larsen’s engineering chops and Scum’s mastering touch, the production has a gritty, in-your-face quality that matches the band’s chaotic energy perfectly. Now, reflecting on Gospels For The Sick, I gotta say—it’s messy as hell, but that’s kinda the point. In a world full of polished pop-rock albums trying too hard to please everyone, Scum went rogue. They made something ugly, brutal, and honest. And honestly? We needed that. Unexpected remark: If this album were a person, it’d probably show up late to a party, knock over a table, and leave before anyone could ask why they came. But damn, would you remember them.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool fact: The album *Gospels For The Sick* by Scum is like a chaotic mashup of genres and styles. It blends punk, black metal, heavy metal, hardcore, and thrash into one wild ride. What makes it even more unique? The artwork and design were handled by Stephen O'Malley, who’s known for his work with the experimental metal band Sunn O))). So, it's not just the music that’s intense—the visuals pack a punch too. Oh, and fun detail: Casey Chaos, best known as the frontman of Amen, wrote the lyrics and handled vocals, adding his signature raw energy to the mix.

Scum was a short-lived project formed by Amen's Casey Chaos, members of Mindgrinder, Zyklon and Emperor: their only 2005 album, Gospel of the Sick, is a simple D-tuned Punk Rock clone of Obituary, Destruction and Sentenced.

As far as I know they're not, but hopefully we'll see another release or activity of some sort in the future. This release is one of those rare things that only happen with the right people at the right time, in the right place.
