Review by Bob Barkey

Valses Mexicanos Inmortales II: A Whirlwind of Heartstrings and Trumpets Let’s cut to the chase—Valses Mexicanos Inmortales II isn’t just an album; it’s like a time machine that zaps you straight into Pedro Infante’s golden-era Mexico, with Mariachi Guadalajara and Orquesta De Los Hermanos Domínguez backing him up like loyal amigos in a Spaghetti Western. Released under Peerless (a label name that screams “we’re confident”), this record is a love letter to anyone who digs Latin, Folk, World, or Country vibes. And yeah, even though it dropped in the US, it feels as authentic as churros dipped in hot chocolate at your abuela’s house. Now, let’s talk tracks because 12 songs is a lot to unpack, but I’ll hit you with two standouts that stuck in my brain like gum on a summer sidewalk. First up: “Viva Mi Desgracia.” Oh man, this one hits hard. It’s got that classic “woe-is-me” vibe we all secretly adore when life feels like a telenovela. The trumpets blare like they’re announcing royalty, and Pedro’s voice? Pure silk over gravel. You can practically picture yourself sitting in some dimly lit cantina, nursing a drink named after heartbreak while dramatically staring into the distance. This track reminds me why people say music heals—it doesn’t fix your problems, but dang if it doesn’t make them sound poetic. Then there’s “Dios Nunca Muere,” which sounds like what heaven might play during happy hour. The strings swell so beautifully, you’d think they were trying to serenade the stars themselves. There’s something about the way Pedro delivers those lyrics—it’s not flashy, just heartfelt enough to give you goosebumps without being overly sappy. If this song came out today, influencers would lose their minds posting sunset reels with it. Look, here’s the thing: albums like Valses Mexicanos Inmortales II are rare gems these days. They don’t slap you with auto-tune or try too hard to be cool—they just exist, unapologetically dripping with soul. Listening to it feels like finding an old photograph tucked inside a dusty book—you didn’t know you needed it until you stumbled across it. And honestly? As much as I love modern playlists packed with bangers, nothing beats realizing how timeless good music really is. So next time you're feeling fancy—or maybe just need background noise for taco night—give this bad boy a spin. Who knows? Maybe you'll start humming along and forget why you ever cared about whatever was trending last week. Final thought: If Pedro Infante were alive today, he’d probably kill it on TikTok. Just saying.
