Squadra Bossa Ft Buscemi - Welcome To The Party Vol 1

Review by Rubens Cavalheiro Domingues

Welcome To The Party Vol. 1: A Genre-Defying Extravaganza Released in 2008 by the Belgian label Downsall Plastics, Welcome To The Party Vol. 1 is not just an album—it’s a kaleidoscopic journey through soundscapes that blur the lines between jazz, rock, Latin rhythms, electronic beats, and folk influences. Spearheaded by Squadra Bossa with Buscemi at the helm as both compiler and performer, this record feels like a musical conversation happening across continents, eras, and genres. It’s messy in all the best ways, packed with big personalities and bold choices. The album features an eclectic mix of styles ranging from gypsy jazz to house, downtempo to ska. With contributions from artists like Philip Cortez on percussion, Bart Borremans on saxophone, and vocalists Joy Adegoke and Lena Kovak, it’s hard not to get lost in its vibrant tapestry. But two tracks stand out for me personally—tracks that stick around long after the needle lifts off the vinyl (or, you know, Spotify stops playing). First up: “Chicharrons N Boogaloo.” If ever there was a track designed to make your hips move without permission, this is it. The interplay between the punchy brass section led by Sam Versweyveld’s trumpet and Dree Peremans’ trombone creates a vibe so infectious, it almost feels illegal. There’s something about how the groove locks into place—the bongos hit just right, and the bassline groans underneath like it has secrets to tell. You can practically smell the street food stalls and feel the heat rising off the pavement while listening. This isn’t background music; it demands attention. And once it grabs hold, good luck shaking it loose. Then there’s “Oya O,” which flips the script entirely. Where “Chicharrons” is fiery and unapologetic, “Oya O” eases you into a dreamlike state. Viviani Godoy’s vocals float above the arrangement like smoke curling toward the ceiling, ethereal yet grounded. The production here leans heavily into downtempo and future jazz territory, but what makes it unforgettable is the subtle layering. Each instrument gets its moment to shine without overshadowing the others—a rare feat in such a dense genre mashup. Listening to it feels like stepping into another world, one where time slows down and everything glows slightly golden. What strikes me most about Welcome To The Party Vol. 1 is its refusal to be pinned down. It doesn’t care if you’re looking for pure jazz or straight-up dancefloor fuel—it gives you both, plus a whole lot more. Tracks like “High Up On The Hook” throw in unexpected twists, blending Eastern European folk vibes with slick electronic production. Meanwhile, remixes like “Last Night (Benny Page Remix)” show how versatile these songs can be, morphing seamlessly into dub-heavy reinterpretations. If I had to nitpick, some moments feel overstuffed, like the album could’ve benefited from trimming a few tracks. But honestly? That chaos is part of its charm. It’s less polished gemstone and more raw, glittering ore—and sometimes, that’s exactly what you need. Reflecting on Welcome To The Party Vol. 1, I’m reminded of those chaotic house parties where everyone brings their favorite dish, and somehow, it all works together. Sure, there might be too many desserts and not enough chairs, but who cares when the energy’s this electric? In a way, this album captures that same spirit—a little bit messy, totally unpredictable, and utterly unforgettable. Just don’t blame me if you find yourself dancing alone in your living room at 2 AM.
