Shadow Project - Dead BabiesKiller

Review by Sarah Heffern

Shadow Project’s Dead Babies Killer: A Dark Ride Through Goth Rock Chaos Alright, let’s talk about Dead Babies Killer, the 1992 release from Shadow Project. This album is a raw slice of Goth Rock and Deathrock goodness that feels like it crawled out of some shadowy corner of the early '90s underground scene. Released under Triple X Records in the US, this record isn’t your typical polished rock album—it’s gritty, unapologetic, and dripping with attitude. First off, can we just take a moment to appreciate Eva O.? She’s all over this thing—vocals, guitar, producing—you name it. The woman basically carried the band on her back, and you can hear her stamp all over these tracks. And hey, shoutout to Thomas Morgan on drums and Aaron Schwartz on bass for keeping things heavy and tight. Brian Virtue’s engineering skills deserve props too; he made sure everything sounded as haunting as it needed to be. Now, onto the songs. The title tracks “Dead Babies” and “Killer” are standouts, no doubt. I mean, how could they not be? These aren’t exactly tunes you hum while making breakfast (unless your mornings are way darker than mine). “Dead Browns” hits hard right away with its brooding atmosphere and Eva O.'s vocals—they’re somewhere between a snarl and a whisper, pulling you into this twisted world she’s created. It’s one of those tracks that sticks with you because it’s so damn unsettling. Like, you’ll find yourself thinking about it at random times during the day. Not bad for a song about… well, dead babies. Then there’s “Killer.” This one leans more into that Deathrock vibe, with driving rhythms and an almost hypnotic energy. There’s something oddly catchy about it, even though the subject matter is anything but cheerful. Maybe it’s Paris’ keys or Chuck Collison’s sampler work adding layers of eerie texture—I dunno, but it works. It’s the kind of track that makes you want to crank up the volume and embrace your inner goth kid, even if you haven’t worn black eyeliner since high school. What really gets me about this album is how unfiltered it feels. Nothing here is trying to win awards or appeal to mainstream tastes. Instead, it’s like Shadow Project said, “Here’s our weird little nightmare soundscape—take it or leave it.” And honestly? That honesty makes it memorable. So yeah, Dead Babies Killer might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re into dark, moody rock with a side of chaos, this one’s worth checking out. Just don’t listen to it alone late at night unless you’re cool with nightmares. Oh, and fun fact: apparently, the band broke up shortly after this album came out. Makes sense, though—how do you follow up something this intense? Guess we’ll never know.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool fact: The 1992 album *Dead BabiesKiller* by Shadow Project was a true team effort, but Eva O. stole the spotlight. She not only sang and played guitar but also produced the whole thing. Talk about wearing multiple hats! The album blends Goth Rock and Deathrock, creating a dark, haunting vibe that fits its intense title perfectly. It’s wild to think one person could pull all that off, but Eva made it happen.

It seems as though the person that printed up the 34 limited copies of the “Dead Babies” cassette also made 100 metal Shadow Project pins. Does anyone know where to purchase one of the metal Shadow Project pins?
