Tommy Guerrero - Soul Food Taqueria

Review by Michael DiMella

Soul Food Taqueria: A Genre-Bending Mess That Somehow Works Tommy Guerrero’s Soul Food Taqueria is the kind of album that doesn’t care if you’re confused. Released in 2002, this thing is a chaotic stew of jazz, funk, hip-hop, blues, rock—hell, even ambient and downtempo vibes sneak their way in. It's like someone threw a bunch of genres into a blender, hit "puree," and dared us to drink it. And guess what? You’ll probably choke on some parts, but damn if it isn’t refreshing. This record came out via labels like Mo Wax and Be With Records, so yeah, it had some street cred right off the bat. But let’s get real—it’s not perfect. Some tracks feel stitched together with duct tape, while others sound like they were recorded in Guerrero’s garage (spoiler: they kinda were). Still, there’s something raw about it that hits different. Like, you can tell Tommy played most of the instruments himself—guitar, bass, keys, percussion—and didn’t overthink it too much. That DIY vibe sticks to your ribs. Let me break down two tracks that stuck with me because they’re polar opposides yet both slap hard: First up, "It Gets Heavy (feat. Gresham Taylor)". This one punches you in the face from the jump. The beat is nasty, gritty as hell, and Gresham’s vocals add this smoky layer that feels like you're sitting in a dimly lit bar at 3 AM. There’s no sugarcoating here; it’s straight-up heavy, man. Not just sonically either—the lyrics hit deep. By the time the track ends, you’re left feeling like you’ve been through some emotional wringer. It’s messy, loud, and unapologetic—a banger for sure. Then there’s "Terra Unfirma", which is basically the opposite. This cut floats by like a lazy Sunday afternoon. All lo-fi beats and mellow guitar riffs, it’s the type of song you throw on when you’re trying to zone out or pretend life isn’t falling apart around you. But don’t mistake chill for boring—this track sneaks up on you. Before you know it, you’re nodding along, lost in its hypnotic groove. It’s proof that Guerrero knows how to keep things interesting without needing to shout. Now, let’s talk production. Monte Vallier mixed this beast, and whoever MANDY is, props to them for mastering it because somehow all these wild styles gel together. Even the artwork by Stephen Powers fits the vibe—simple, bold, and kinda scrappy. Oh, and shoutout to Chuck Treece on drums where he pops up; dude crushes it every time. But honestly, what makes Soul Food Taqueria unforgettable isn’t just the music—it’s the attitude. Guerrero didn’t try to make a polished masterpiece. He made something real, something flawed, something alive. Listening to it feels like walking into a dive bar where everyone’s arguing about politics, drinking cheap beer, and somehow still having the best night ever. So yeah, give this album a spin if you want something weird, imperfect, and totally badass. Just don’t expect it to hold your hand. Reflection time: Maybe we need more albums like this—ones that don’t give a damn about fitting neatly into boxes. Or maybe I’m just hungry and craving tacos now. Either way, respect. Final Verdict: 8/10. Fucked up in all the right ways.

My first skate deck was a Tommy Guerrero in the 80's, I haven't skated in decades, but when I heard he was putting out albums I gave it a listen and have been sharing it ever since. We both gravitated to music in our lives and I think that's awsome. I went a bit heavier but good music is undeniable and I can't deny! Well done Tommy!
