Album Review: Sorcerer by Tonstartssbandht Alright, so let’s talk about Sorcerer by Tonstartssbandht, an album that kinda sneaks up on you. Released in 2017, it’s this weird but cool blend of Alternative/Indie Rock, Experimental vibes, and a dash of Lo-Fi charm. It came out in the UK, US, and Japan through labels like Mexican Summer and Magniph Records, so yeah, it got around. The brothers behind the music—Andy White and Edwin Mathis White—are clearly vibing on some next-level sibling synergy here. And props to Josh Bonati for mastering and Bailey Elder for the design. Honestly, everything just feels intentional, even when it’s messy. Now, onto the tracks. There are only six songs, and they’re basically variations of three tunes: “Sorcerer,” “Breathe,” and “Opening.” At first, I was like, "Wait, is this some kind of minimalist joke?" But then it clicked—it’s not about quantity; it’s about how these tracks evolve. Let me break it down real quick. First up, “Sorcerer.” This one sticks with me because it’s got this hypnotic groove that feels like driving late at night with no destination. The guitars are all washed out, and there’s this droning rhythm that pulls you in without trying too hard. You can tell they weren’t sweating perfection here—it’s raw, kinda scrappy, but still super smooth. Like, imagine if My Bloody Valentine decided to chill out a bit more. That’s “Sorcerer” for ya. Then there’s “Breathe,” which honestly feels like the emotional core of the whole thing. It starts off mellow, almost like a lullaby, but then builds into this swirling crescendo. The vocals are buried deep in the mix, which makes it feel less like singing and more like someone whispering secrets into your ear. I don’t know what the lyrics are saying (they’re pretty indecipherable), but that doesn’t matter. It’s more about the mood, you know? Feels like floating in warm water or staring at clouds—peaceful but kinda overwhelming at the same time. The repetition of the tracks actually works in its favor. By the time you hit the second version of “Breathe” or “Sorcerer,” it’s like revisiting an old friend who’s changed slightly since you last saw them. Same vibe, different perspective. It’s subtle, but once you catch onto it, it’s kinda genius. Honestly, listening to Sorcerer feels like peeking into someone’s private jam session. It’s intimate, unpolished, and refreshingly human. Plus, it’s wild how something so lo-fi can sound so lush. Like, did they record this in a garage or a cathedral? Who knows, and maybe that’s the point. Final thought: If you’re looking for background music to zone out to, this ain’t it. But if you want something that’ll make you stop scrolling Instagram and just listen, give Sorcerer a shot. Oh, and fun fact—I keep accidentally calling it “Soar-sure” instead of “Sore-sure.” Don’t judge me; it’s catchy either way. Rating: 8/10. Would recommend pairing with headphones and a good couch.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a fun fact: The album *Sorcerer* by Tonstartssbandht is like a musical palindrome. The tracklist mirrors itself—starting with "Sorcerer," then "Breathe," and "Opening," before reversing the order. It’s almost as if the album is playing tricks on you, looping back in a seamless cycle. Released in 2017, it blends lo-fi vibes, indie rock energy, and experimental twists, making it feel both raw and intentional. Plus, it’s got this DIY charm, with Bailey Elder handling the design and layout, and Josh Bonati mastering the sound. A true gem for fans of unconventional music.

okay so i just realized that this dude plays guitar with mac demarco on a couple of those kexp shows. i always really liked his insane guitar solo towards the end of one of those sets and i just found out about tonstartssbandht because i bought the cheapest record 100% electronica had in their webstore and their An When album was 10 bucks. Fell in love immediately when i listened to 5ft7 before buying the record. Felt like it was something i listened to before. Same with Black Country, they both remind me of my teenage days. But seeing the rainbow guitar strap, the mustache, and the tattoos it all clicked for me. I haven't taken that An When record off of one of my turntables since i got it a couple days ago. This band is so sick my dudes, i can't believe it took me until 2020 to discover them. thanks for the music yall
